To me it makes sense to go for a strong defense this season. Pitching is largely a crapshoot from season to season, and if it's a good/lucky year for the Cubs, it could be a playoff team. If not, the future is still solid and they can continue to retool.
Sign Bourn, Marcum, Kelly Johnson, Delmon Young, and Howell
    Soriano for Dominick Brown
Trade: Barney, Brown, Vitters, and Jackson for Headley
Trade: Samardzja and Baez for Upton

    Bourn-cf
    Castro-ss
    Rizzo-lb
    Headley-3b
    Upton-rf
    Young/Shierholz-lf
    Castillo-c
    Johnson-2b

    Rotation:
Garza, Jackson, Marcum, Feldman, Wood, Baker

    Bullpen:
    Marmol, Fujikawa, Russell, Howell, Dolis,

Borderline playoff team, if doesn't perform pieces to deal at dealine: Young/Shierholz, Johnson, Garza, Marcum, Feldman, Baker, Marmol, Russell

Delmon Young is probably the last person I'd expect or want the Cubs to sign. No fielding value. Had a negative WAR as mostly a DH last season and swings at anything that comes near him.

I don't think the Cubs would be able to sign Marcum given how many starting pitchers they already have.

Too little to get Headley and too much to give up for Upton. I see no way the Cubs can get both Upton and Headley this offseason. But I do like both of them. I also do not see Marcum either.

That package doesn't get Headley. Barf on signing Delmon Young and I wouldn't trade Samardzija or Baez either one for Justin Upton. Both Uptons are considerably overrated.

I'd say Justin Upton has crossed over to considerably underrated territory. One year and it feels as if people forget just how young and good he is.

The laziness concerns me far too much to give up blue chip assets for him. I've had Upton the last three years on my fantasy team, so I've watched considerably more of him than I have others. At one point last year he was benched for what seemed like an eternity. Didn't motivate him to play any better either. D-Backs fans gave him the Soriano treatment as well. He just doesn't excite me. Too much baggage to part with our best pitcher and prospect for him.

Justin Upton was playing through an injury last year because he thought the team needed him when several other starters were hurt. He probably pissed off ownership because they seem to hate everything everybody else in baseball likes.

anyone think if we sign bourn we might try to sign soriano too? with an under the table trade agreement?

he loses his comp pick for next FA class and gets overpaid for 2013 by the cubs who get prospects or on the off chance that we are buyers ML talent.

Edit #2: or do we lose more for signing multiple type A/B FA??

    Dodgers? you mean?

The Dodgers have agreed to sign J.P. Howell to a one-year deal worth just under $3MM, reports ESPN's Buster Olney (Twitter links). Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times first reported the two sides were moving towards an agreement.

3mill crap... he must want to "win"

Each Free agent you sign tied to compensation would cost a pick. So if the Cubs signed 2 they would lose their 2nd and 3rd round picks.
