Smart tv yes if you don't have PS3 or Xbox.
Plasma never ever it will burn over time and leave marks if paused long
LCD is decent I have it
Led is the best by far. I would recommend a sharp aquas led or whatever it's called best picture I've seen
I have a Sony Bravia LCD and its pretty good.

At least here, I don't see many decent TV's that don't include some form of Smart TV functionality. I use the DLNA/UPnP feature of my TV, since I have a NAS and stream Music/Video from it to the TV. You can do that over a PS3 / XBOX or most new Blue Ray Players or even AV Receiver.

In the end the deciding factor should be picture quality, like others said, most services can be had over a box that cost ~100$.

I'd go LED or Plasma. Plasma has a great value to price ratio, at least in the 50"+ range. Plasmas need a relatively dark room to shine since their brightness isn't as high as LED TV's, but Black levels and therefor contrast is incredible on a decent Plasma. LED TV's work better in brighter rooms and still have decent black levels and good color.

Thanks for the input/advice everyone. I'm pretty much decided on not getting a smart tv at this point and basically just looking at other options

Just get a really good HD tv with an HD Roku. It will most likely be a lot cheaper.

For those of you who use internet browsers on smart tv, how the browser speed? Right now I just have a small low power pc hook up to my 50 inch and runs just as fast as a regular pc. I only use it to browse web, pandora, google music, and netflix nothing like productive or games.

Honestly I love my smarTV more for the ability to stream stuff from my Galaxy note 2 or from the PC without any special programs

If you can get a BETTER tv picture/specs wise WITHOUT "smart" features then go that route. If its something thats kind of a throw in, then cool.

I have a PS3 so I just use Amazon and VUDU through that. When I get my new place I think I'm going cableless so that Sony google player is DEF on my list. I did a compare and contrast with ALL the internet players ROKU, BOXEE, Sony etc and the Sony seemed to do what all the others did plus more (i.e runs Flash fine).

I know man, I absolutely cannot wait to get it. I saw one at Best Buy and I just started to laugh because of how ridiculously big it is. Not to mention the home theater I have to go with it. Gonna be awesome watching or listening to music, sporting events or boxing/MMA.

I've been thinking about similar to this. Basically me and my girlfriend just use our laptops as our tv, I have a hulu account and we'll go on sites like abc.com or mtv.com also to watch things. I also download torrents and watch movies like that. So we're kinda sick of using our laptops and want to get a big monitor or tv, but not even get tv service, so instead of watching all our stuff on our laptops we can be more relax and watch it on tv.

So if I get apple tv can I browse the web and watch shows off of websites like mtv.com etc? Also, if I have apple tv, can I use it to play my downloaded movies? Currently I use vlc to play them?

I'm not sure if you can stream your downloaded movies to apple TV I would think you could but you can use apps like Netflix, Hulu, MLB, NBA, etc. I'm also not too sure how good the browser is on there to watch things straight off of websites. I know GoogleTV is pretty good with it but it's not offered anymore in the current retail market. Push comes to shove if you can't watch from websites you can always pick up an HDMI cable to hook the lappy up to your TV

Yea, it might have to come down to this. Its a bit annoying cuz one of the things that bothers me right now is the amount of electronics on our coffee table, and this wouldn't solve that. But there doesn't seem to be any other real solution that would do everything I'm trying to do. My laptop doesn't even have hdmi, it does have a wierd looking connection tho which I'm hoping is a dvi.
