'Twas a St. Louis Cardinals' Night Before Christmas

A little late for Christmas, but still entertaining.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through Busch Stadium not a creature was stirring, not even a squirrel. The ball gloves were hung in the clubhouse with care in hopes that a new pennant would soon be won there.

Our Redbirds are happily resting their heads as they dream of beating those Cincinnati Reds. Matheny in his uniform and Mozeliak, his scarf, are eager for next year to have both Waino and Carp.

When out in right field there arose such a clatter. It was gimpy Carlos Beltran—now what was the matter? Away to winter leagues, Moze flew with a flash, grabbed Oscar Taveras and made sure that he packed.

The Arch still faint in the center field grass below is where our new Cardinals will blossom and grow. For what to my wandering eyes should appear, but a pantheon of young pitchers who all deserve to be here!

Young Shelby Miller with a fastball so quick, we know now in '09 the Cards made the right pick. More rapid than eagles the fastballs they came, in the playoffs alone, Rosenthal brought himself fame.

On Freesy, on Beltran, on Raffy and Jay! On Yadi, Descalso, Torty, Holliday! From the top of the Central to the top of the league our Cardinals have talent to match their mystique.

If there's a Cardinal fan up North who's also an elf, I'd ask him for an NL Central title, in spite of myself. Why, Santa himself always wears Cardinal red. Unlike those in Chicago where baseball is dread.

For we hope for good gifts to make the off-season merry, like Choate in the pen to tame lefties, once scary. To Matt Carpenter, a new uniform as white as the snow. For Furcal, a new arm, to make every throw.

Another season of health for Allen Craig and David Freese. Another MVP-season from Yadi, if you please. That Jaime Garcia will be less of a riddle, and some run-scoring hits from our bats in the middle.

This year, Cardinal fans were quite hard at work, forgetting a first baseman who left like a jerk. The front office caved, still he turned up his nose. We hope Wainwright is wiser and will stay where he knows...

The Cardinals are loved as we cheer them and whistle, as they pile up the wins and launch homers like missiles. Redbird Nation, enjoy this year's `Oh, Holy Night.'

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"
