It's just a faulty battery sensor more likely than anything. I've had where I shut my phone off, fire it back up, and then it reads that it has 10-20% more battery than before.

If the battery or the sensor are defective it could appear that it has charged though. Which would confuse someone quite a bit. So while it is obvious that it isn't charging itself, there could be a good bit of confusion as to what it seems like it is charging itself.
