But yea, while I want Akers to succeed, and Cundiff hasn't been spectacular even outside of his Ray Finkle kick last year....David is what? 5 of his last 15 from 40+?? Had to do SOMETHING.

I really don't even hate carrying 2 kickers. If the team thinks they can afford the roster spot, then fine. You can approach each game with David starting and give him the opportunity to get his groove back...and if he goes out and crushes a 3...great, keep it rolling...but you have an option if it's obvious he doesn't have it.
This. I really don't think some people understand just how much Akers has hurt us this season. We simply can't afford to gamble on him in the playoffs.

Yeah I mean if we can afford the roster spot, we have Akers for long kicks and Cundiff for short ones. This could get REAL interesting.....

But we'd be gambling on Cundiff as well.

You are gambling on any kicker who is available this late in the season.

Cundiff is even worse than Akers though, he's connected on 58% of his kicks

Right, just saying there isn't a guy out there you can trust on the 49ers or on the street.

Yeah I agree but the way Akers has looked I as of late I really don't see him getting much better during the rest of the post-season. Even the shots that he made in the Cardinals game where iffy. Cundiff is trash as well but I think that Harbaugh is going to go with him because he recognize that Akers isn't mentally stable right now as far as kicking goes and that it would only get worse in the playoffs because there would be a lot more pressure. I just think that Harbaugh wants a kicker who is mentally stable regardless of how good they are headed into the playoffs because he sees the huge risk in using Akers. If you look at his reactions during the Cardinals game to Akers kicks you can see that he really has lost all faith in him at this point.

I still agree with though that either way it's a risk.

CK to Crabtree was a perfect 2 for 2

I'd rather gamble with the guy who's had the better career. Even with Akers' struggles, he's the better kicker.

Jose Cortez has substituted at one point or another in his prolific career for Billy Cundiff, David Akers, and Joe Nedney.
