I dont get why VC is what other teams want, not because I'm a fan because I'm still not good understanding trades. Is it because his contract is good to have on a roster for like flexibility purposes?

if not I dont get the point of getting rid of a guy who's only costing the Mavs 3$ million and is playing better then most the team right now. He might not be winning 6th man of the year but he sure does provide a lot of good off the bench which is exactly what the Mavs want from him.

The problem is, Smith is a PF, not a SF. He's not a wing defender, so we can't really play him long stretches at the 3. And him and Dirk would cause our interior defense to suffer (due to neither being a strong defensive center). While I'm all for Smith, it's just not a good fit for this team.

Though I agree with Skizzik's assessment about Josh Smith not being the ideal 'fit' at SF with our team, I would deal for him without question. Using Shawn Marion if we have to as well.

A reason I think Dallas held back on the Calderon trade not sending Vince out was because as much as we may have needed an upgrade at PG it takes a step back with a veteran leader and scorer, making it pointless. Plus VC really has produced well for only $3M/yr.

Mavs weren't all in for Calderon, but considered the notion because his $10.6M expiring fit the plan powder, which leads to the fact Smith's fit isn't perfect and the ideal guy Dallas is seeking, BUT his expiring $13.4M contract is.

Plus on top of getting the incredibly athletic 27-year-old J-Smoove who may or may not gel into the Mavericks system, IF for some reason things didn't work out, the Mavs would have gained his bird rights and the ability to utilize Smith in summer sign and trades.

That makes it no gamble on Dallas' part to at least give Smith a go and see if things could work out and the Mavs would have a top 15-20 NBA talent.

The only contract we have next year is Dirk and Cunningham

^ yeah maybe because he can defend a little bit gives you energy but i would say if marion plays without dirk he will retrie quick.. you can see it lately after marion has played with dirk his stats and performance are going up..so marions value is higher with dirk and the mavs

the other fact is that we can't do much when we have only dirk and cunningham because we all know what happens to FA and our biggest chance to get some stars (good roleplayer) is with a trade but tell me how we can do a trade without any players that we want to trade? .......
