My thoughts as well. First of all he left out the position in his tweet so that's the first big problem. Either way he looks to be their starting catcher until Zunino is up. Then they have Morales at first, and Morse who can fill in there if Morales gets hurt. I don't see where Smoak fits in.
The only bad thing about Smoak is that he can't play LF, which seems like something the BRS want, even though I'd prefer that we just stick with Kalish in our LF platoon.
"The Red Sox announced that they avoided salary arbitration with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The Munsey Sports Management client obtains a one-year, $4.5MM deal for 2013, Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports."

WOW salty for 4.5 and napoli for 5...that seems crazy
I know I've been preaching a Smoak deal as a backup, but someone who makes more sense is Mike Carp form the same team because he can play LF and 1B. He also has a career OPS of over 1.000 in Fenway in a very SSS. He is under team control to 2017.
i i like a Mike Carp he'd be a sox

I've heard Ortiz still isn't %100 and with Napoli being 1 big swing and a miss away from tearing his hip out of proportion, there is a legitimate chance we miss large stretches of the season without the middle of our order, than what?
1. L Drew SS
2. S Victorino RF
3. L Ellsbury CF
4. R Pedroia 2B
5. R Middlebrooks 3B
6, S Saltalamacchia DH
7. R Gomes LF
8. R Lavarnway C
9. R Gomez 1B

We're not talking about the same player. I was pointing out that the M's don't need Salty in order to keep Montero from going to first. They've already got 4 guys with 1B experience even if one of them goes to DH (Morales, IMO, given Morse's objection).
I'm sure that they'll deal one or more of them. The question is not whether one gets dealt but what the correct compensation is from the Sox.
The Naopli deal includes pretty achievable playing time incentives that escalate the value to $13M. Long story short, if he doesn't go to the DL because of his hip he costs $13M.
Cherrington made Cody Ross 3 different offers according to NESN.
A name to look out for this year come draft time. This kid looks like a beast. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/...ovington-wa-hs
Lol
I guess now that the deal with Napoli is official we should look for a backup 1B.
Options in the club: M Gomez, Salty
Available FA: Kotchman, Overbay, Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff, Luke Scott
In other posts all the options above besides Scott have been somewhat identified by other posters, but I think he can be better ofensively than the other candidates (maybe except Salty, if he's not dealt; and that's a big if...).
I'm aware that he can be a defensive liability (Napoli and Salty are not GG either), but I think he's the one who offers more upside, and we'd prevent the Rays from signing him, for what is worth.
What do you guys think? Who do think should be our primary target for backup 1B???
Certainly there are other options and I didn't include any trades in my analysis. I don't think the FO is going to trade for a backup, but you never know... They'd have to come cheap in terms of prospects and have some upside. Personally I don't see both qualities in any of the guys you metioned
