Bogaerts is not that great as a SS. He DOES need to improve defensively to be an every day SS, even one in the Miguel Tejada/Nomar mold. What I think the blog writers misconstrued was the concern that Xander would physically outgrow the SS position rather than be a defensive liability. I'm not all that worried about him growing too big for the position.

No. The peak is usually the week prior to the Winter Meetings and two weeks after. Lots of FOs give extended breaks around the holidays so the rumor mills slow down considerably. Most of the big names have come off the board and the Sox have likely done all the work they're going to do (pending the completion of the Napoli deal) so I don't see much more happening. A few guys will get minor league deals with invites to ST; mostly complimentary pieces.

    x2

Chris Mellen said this the other day:

I'm actually on the absolute opposite end of the spectrum on Xander Bogaerts' at shortstop. After scouting his defense all season, especially some long, extended looks after he got to Portland, I think it is less likely today that he sticks than last year.

I still believe we need one or two more SP signings for depth. We all know that someone will eventually get hurt/shut down for a long period of time. I'm still worried about Ortiz's ankle. Is he just too old to heal back to 100%? Is he too old to produce as our main bat? I am worried about those issues with him. Also a little worried that our offense will not produce like some think they will.

1-2 more SPs? Perhaps, but I think it FAR more likely that the high profile arms like De La Rosa and Webster will be the fallback position. RDLR already has some MLB experience and threw pretty well after surgery from what I've heard. Hernandez and Wright may also figure into the equation. That won't satisfy your desire for experienced arms but seems like a reasonable plan if we're REALLY about building for 2014 and beyond.

Ortiz' injury SHOULD be a concern for people. The amount of time that it has taken to heal, if it's even fully healed now, says a lot about how he'll deal with injuries over the next two years. Seems like it won't take too much to re-injure (pure conjecture on my part). He may end up being a more complimentary piece than anticipated.

With that, the offese will be way off pace from what neo-Sox fans have come to expect. They'll produce runs enough to stay in the middle of the pack and will probably clobber LHP (if Napoli is okay). That might be a good thing with the way NYY is stacking up.

Oh no.... Ortiz finally declining through age/injuries. At least it wasn't a 3 year deal.

I agree, we have a good holding of mid/end rotation SP's - enough to get us through until the ASB anyhow, in which case one of the kids can come up.

6/27/09: “We expect [Rondo] to play by the rules and be a leader as a point guard. We need him to be more of a leader,” Ainge said. “There were just a couple situations where he was late this year, I don’t know if he was sitting in his car, but showed up late and the rest of the team was there. We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

    Some jerks never learn.....

Depending on how cheap he is becoming, Marcum may be a smart signing. I like him if hes going to be a #4-ish pitcher.

Well Doubrount would have to start IMO but injuries happen constantly. Especially here it seems. Marcum would get plenty of starts. Then depending on how he pitches we could either trade Lackey or just give up on him if he's pitching terribly.

Doubront is out of options and putting him in the pen would be a waste. There won't be any more FA pitching signings from us unless it's minor league deals or a trade happens.

I had Doubront as 2013 breakout player and he has to start.

I know Baltimore has been linked to him, but if the price is right in terms of prospects (a big "if"), what about Jason Kubel to platoon in left with Gomes?

Reasonable contract (something like 2 years/$16 million), and he's hit OK in Fenway.
