Jets Expected To Release Veteran Players

The Jets are expected to release Eric Smith,Jason Smith,Calvin Pace, and last but not least Bart Scott before free agency begins in March

ORCHARD PARK —The Jets have a ton of uncertainty in their front office and coaching staff; they also have a lot of players who may not be back in 2013.

The Jets are expected to release linebacker Bart Scott, linebacker Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith and tackle Jason Smith before free agency begins in March to clear salary-cap room.

Scott declined to comment on his future. He said he’s just concentrating on getting his injured right big toe better.

Pace said he’s not sure what will happen.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t make those decisions. I would love to be [back]. We’ll see.”

The Jets also have a number of their own free agents who could depart. The most high-profile are tight end Dustin Keller, safety LaRon Landry, safety Yeremiah Bell, guard Brandon Moore, guard Matt Slauson, wide receiver Braylon Edwards, running back Shonn Greene, linebacker Bryan Thomas and defensive tackle Mike DeVito.

Most of the players said they would like to be back.

Shouldn't they get a GM first, and then allow him to evaluate these plyers.

    This is a speculation piece.

There's not much to evaluate here they are old and slow and way past there prime. There will be alot of new faces on defense next season with Pace,Scott,Smith being released and Devito and Bryan Thomas not coming back. The only two question marks to me are Bell and Pouha. Bell id like to see for another year and Pouha might have some trade value and can be replaced by Kendrick Ellis who when healthy has looked good. And obviously we all want Landry back

I wouldnt be surprised to see someone like Pace be cut, test the market, realize there isnt one and come back much much cheaper, which i would be OK with from a depth and veteran perspective

I think even the "arm chair" GM knows that Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Jason Smith, Tim Tebow, and Eric Smith won't be back due to the amount of money the team can save by releasing them. Do you need to be an NFL GM to know that?

There's is absolutely no doubt that, unless these guys are willing to restructure their deals so they make significantly less, they will be cut. Now, they may be resigned (especially Scott), but they'll be cut first.

The only real questions are what they do with Tebow and Pouha. Pouha is especially interesting, as the Jets could save 3.83 million by cutting him, and they might be able to keep DeVito for less. But DeVito is undersized and, despite Pouha's recent injury history, he's fantastic when he's on the field.

I'm not trying to be funny, but are you really going to keep Jason Smith when you can save 12 million by releasing him?

Or Calvin Pace at 8.56 million savings??

Or Bart Scott at 7.15 million savings?

Anyone with half a brain cell can see that!

Pouha was far from fantastic this past year.

I think Bart Scott can still contribute, but might have to look at his salary.

I like his passion even if it boils over sometimes.
