Three assistant coaches let go by Lions

While Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz’s job appears safe, the Lions let go three assistant coaches on Monday according to reports.

Gone are wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, running backs coach Sam Gash and offensive line coach George Yarno.

All three had contracts that were expiring.

Jefferson spent eight seasons as a coach with the Lions after playing for them in the 2003 season. He spent 13 years playing in the NFL. He was in two Super Bowls — one with the Chargers and one with the Patriots.

Last week Calvin Johnson credited Jefferson with his development as an elite NFL wide receiver.

Jefferson started his Lions coaching career as a coaching intern in 2005.

Gash served as running backs coach for five seasons after getting a start with the Lions as assistant special teams coach in 2007.

Yarno was the offensive line coach for four seasons. He was brought in when Scott Linehan was named offensive coordinator.

Jefferson going is kind of a surprise to me Jefferson probably looking for a promotion, though.

"The way they play offense here is difficult for any quarterback," he said. "Every snap is an incredible decision. They're in a one-back offense, they can't run the ball against certain looks so they have to audible to some kind of a pass or a creative run to get away from trouble.
"There's never a play in the game where Stafford can just turn around, hand the ball off and catch his breath. Every play he's researching the defense and they throw as much as anyone."

LFFS or LFLOL can move this, just update the title or something to say 3 fired. I don't think people want to look through pages just to see if someone was fired or not

Anyone have any idea who some replacements could be?

I think the WR coach will benefit a lot since chances are they'll bring in some little things Jefferson didn't coach which should help everyone, even Calvin. Everyone has their own little tips/techniques

Would sure be nice. Eliminate half the drops and we probably have a few more wins out of it. There was at least 5 TDs dropped on the season (2 CJ, 3 Pettigrew) and I'm pretty sure Titus dropped a few more, but I'm not positive. That's just freaking horrible. Catch the ****ing ball and hold onto it. Not hard to do lol

I think he actually improved the O line pass blocking during his time here. But we still need to get better imo

Kind of surprised Crossman wasn't fired. But the ST really improved (except the returns) since the Titans game I think. Coverage was pretty damn good even though we had a ****** punter.
