Report: To get a real GM, Jets must fire Tannenbaum

The Jets are reaching out to potential GM candidates, while exploring ways to keep current GM Mike Tannenbaum in a cap management role, according to league sources.

The Jets are trying to beef up their front office, particularly in personnel, given their failing in the draft and free agency in recent years. But owner Woody Johnson is looking for a way to keep Tannenbaum in a different capacity, primarily as a negotiator/cap guy, sources said. The team has quietly reached out to potential candidates to gauge interest in the bizarre arrangement, including approaching Mike Maccagnan, Houston's director of college scouting.

As expected, candidates have significant issues with the parameters, sources said. Tannenbaum has created many of the Jets issues with bloated contracts given to players like Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes, to name two, coupled with cap mismanagement that has left New York in a difficult plight heading into 2013. Furthermore, Tannenbaum has shared a very close relationship with Johnson, which naturally would be a red flag for someone joining the Jets from the outside.

Several potential GM candidates -- men expected to garner interviews for soon-to-be-open general manager jobs -- said they would never consider taking the Jets job under these circumstances and doubted that any strong candidate would.

"That's totally ridiculous," one exec said. "Only the Jets."

In the end, Johnson may have to bite the bullet and part with Tannenbaum in order to land a someone highly qualified for the position.

I agree. If we keep Tanny, we will be undermining the new GM & scaring away many potential suitors.

A GM won't want to work for an owner who's constantly stepping on their toes, especially from the beginning. Just let them do their job.

If Woody decides that Tanny isn't the right guy for the job anymore, he must be removed from the organization entirely.

I don't understand why anyone would want to keep Tanny as a capologist. Look at the ridiculous contracts he has given to players like Holmes, Sanchez, Harris, Pace, and Eric Smith. All of these players are being paid like top players at their respective positions, when in reality none of them are.

Jets wont get any respectable known GM or candidate. Lack of Talent, bloated contracts and Tanny retaining final say will keep anyone worth a grain of salt away from this team.

This....from the looks of it he sucks at the cap just as bad as he does drafting and evaluating talent, why Woody would want to keep him after the mess he has put us in is ridiculous and scares the **** out me that we aint getting better no time soon when are owner is looking for ways to keep the freaking guy thats mainly to blame for this entire mess

Anyone who comes here knows they have at least a 2 or 3 year "rebuild job" when you factor in the contracts the Jets have. You figure this year, you can get rid of Pace, Scott, Jason Smith, Eric Smith, Tim Tebow, and perhaps Sione Pouha.

Then in 2014, you can get rid of Holmes and Sanchez.

Quite frankly, the Jets are going to have to "watch what they do" probably for at least 2 years. Just this off-season alone for next season, 7 players take up 80 million in cap space, which means you have 45 or 46 million for 46 spots on the 53 man roster, meaning above all else, the Jets need to have "able bodies" in rounds 4-7 that are cheap but provide good value.

That is not to say the product will be bad because a Good GM can get the right players here.

He isn't even a cap specialist look at the whole we are in because of him. Good riddens. He has tried making this team competitive but he has not done the job. Good bye Mr T.

See you later Tanny. He needs to go and we need to start fresh with a GM that has an eye for evaluating talent because thats been the problem the last few years.

With the state the team is currently in we can't afford to miss on ANY picks we make in the next few seasons. I am not naive enough to think that this team will be a quick fix by adding a player or two. Also we're clearly not in a situation like the Colts or Skins where they add a stud QB and instantly turn their teams around. Its going to take time, patience and skill to fix this mess we're in.

Like Broadway said, he seems like a great guy and I wouldn't mind sharing a beer and talking sports with him either, but if he's whats standing in our way from getting in a solid GM, then he has to go.

I wish Woody would go with him but sadly that is not an option, oh well the trials and tribulations of being a Jets fan.

New York Jets: 1-3 soon to be 1-4

    Please save us, Football Man!!

Whoever the new GM is, I really don't care who, they will have to do the same thing anyway. Avoid spending huge money for the next season or two (though I would strongly suggest LeVitre/Vollmer if the Bills/Pats let either one go), do not trade draft picks (in fact, maybe even look to acquire some), and nail the next couple of drafts.

Shows how much people forget...I am not defending his recent contracts but there was a time where Revis Harris Brick Mangold were all considered elite and needed contracts...guess what....Tanny did it.

Way back in the stands, you can see my Wife holding my son on the ledge at his first Green and White scrimmage...circa 2013...aka "The Transformation" year into greatness! That's right Emryk...you saw the beginning stages of JETS Greatness first hand!

He did give them all contracts but he grossly overpaid Harris. His contract shouldn't have approached the other three. Then he started overpaying for players like Eric Smith, who should only play special teams, unless there is a major injury.
