He wasn't a man. How can he leave behind his wife and THREE F*CKIN DAUGHTERS?? He had no regard for his family. What kind of man is that? He's supposed to protect his family. Now his young daughters will go through their entire life without a father. He didn't care that he was doing that to them.

    No RIP for Freel.

    Deepest condolences to his family.

A very ill man. If you don't understand...it's because you are not ill. The brain can become diseased. Just because a person looks healthy, doesn't mean they are. If you have a mental illness, your perceptions are usually distorted. You never know...he may have done it for his family. That may have been his belief. Since we do not know, it's best to refrain from being judgmental on that basis.

You don't know what he was going through. Neither do I. But what we do know is that he suffered through many concussions during his career in the Majors.

It's possible that the pain was so great, or his brain was doing some wacky things during his last years, and likely days of his life.

Neither you, me, or MLB, knows at the full extent what effects concussions have on athletes in the long-run. And research is to be done in order to prevent these such events from happening in the future.

You obviously have zero understanding of depression. You should probably keep your mouth shut if you're just going to be completely ignorant on the matter.

He was obviously suffering immensely. Depression messes with your brain, which in turn makes you feel like you have no way out and make poor decisions.

Rip Freel. You were all hustle. The comments on his suicide is just plain ignorance - you all should be ashamed of himself he left behind a family. I suffer from depression but I would never take my own life, it would just make it worse for those that knew me. Rip Freel you were one of my fav non-met players to watch.

No more talk about suicide and if it's selfish, right, okay, and what-not.

This thread should be about Freel and his playing days. Not the action that ended it. Please talk about Freel, or I'll simply have to close the thread.

But that's not actually what the thread is about. The thread is about him committing suicide.

Now we are not supposed to discuss what the thread title says?

Might want to change the title of this thread then. The thread has nothing to do with his playing days. It's about his choice to kill himself.

It has been reported that Freel suffered from up to 10 concussions during his playing career. I know doctors are studying how concussions are linked with depression and suicidal tendancies and I hope they can soon get to the point where diagnosing and treating such illnesses can prevent a lot of these young men doing such things. It isn't just Freel, it is happening far too often in lots of different sports.
I feel horribly for his family, especially at this time of year.
