Outside of David Wright the Mets aren't signing any 30+ year old free agents unless they come dirt cheap for one year.

Just resign Hairston for 2/10, I think he's earned it.
Apparently, Cody Ross signing makes Jason Kubel available. Id definitely try to get Kubel or maybe Upton even becomes available again
We are not competing in 2013 and is Hairston really part of our future plans?
Would rather get a younger player and see what he can do. I dont see the point of paying Hairston 5mil in 2014 when we will be spending big money in the offseason on bats and actually looking to compete.
The only reason we would get Hairston is so that our 2013 OF is a little less pitiful looking and maybe eases the fans frustrations a bit in the FOs eyes. I dont see a big enough difference I'd rather savior the money or spend it on someone younger

I would take Kubel, Rivera or Young. Personally, I think Delmon Young would be the best fit. Maybe sign both Young and Grady Sizemore, and roll with Cowgill, Duda, Kirk, Baxter, Sizemore and Young in the OF. Could be worse (not really lol)

The money that some FA options (in whom the Mets might have been interested) have received seems outlandish. Cody Ross gets 3/$26, B.J. Upton - 5/$75, Pagan - 4/$40, Victorino - 3/$39, Napoli - 3/$39. Is it any wonder that Sandy hasn't signed anyone of note yet? Not that we would want him, but Jonny Gomes seems to have set the market for Hairston, and if Gomes got 2/$10, Hairston may be asking for more. I'd still like to see Scotty signed, but maybe the trade route will offer Sandy some much better options.
With Ross on the payroll, might it be more likely that the D-Backs are now willing to move Justin Upton, and could the Mets put up a viable package that doesn't include Wheeler, Harvey, or the newly acquired prospects?
Can the Mets trade for a reasonably inexpensive, established outfielder who has been mentioned as available, like Bonifacio, De Aza or Crisp?
Can Sandy use his considerable skills, and pluck one of the many major league ready (but not necessarily elite) OF prospects from another club. Adam Eaton, (if the D-Backs are keeping Upton), Leonys Martin, Kole Calhoun, Jarrod Dyson, Anthony Gose or Peter Bourjos come to mind.
I hope the trade winds start blowing soon. We fans are impatient for something to happen.

If we could just get Hairston for 2/10 and Kubel somehow, then extend Kubel, our OF wouldn't be so pathetic.
The reason I see for Hairston is that there isn't anyone "young" that is worth giving the shot to.
Even though we aren't set to compete this year - we don't want to completely tank either. Winning (and losing) are learned behavior. It takes more than one season to wash away the stink of a miserable year. I don't want our youngsters learning what it's like to be complete trash.
Beyond that - it isn't like Hairston becomes useless the following season. He'd make a fantastic RH bat off the bench/platoon player on a contending team. 5 mill seems like a lot for our team because of how cheap we are - but if this FO is serious about becoming contenders then we will have to open the purse strings. Even role players get paid.

I may be mistaken, but I believe we are still the ONLY team in MLB not to sign a major league free agent this season (not including re-signings).
Sad.
Man I wish we'd go after Bourn.
AdamRubinESPN Jim Bowden suggests Cody Ross to Diamondbacks could make outfielder Jason Kubel or Justin Upton available via trade.
