Rumor: Cubs and Tigers talking Porcello; O's and Hardy involved

If it brings any comfort at all, executive vice president Dan Duquette hasn't stopped trying to add a starting pitcher or a hitter for the middle of the lineup.
The effort is there. It's the results that are lacking.
Again, the Orioles aren't choosing to stand pat. They just haven't made a deal yet as we move into the second week of January. There's a difference.

I heard last night that the Tigers and Cubs are discussing a potential trade involving pitcher Rick Porcello, who also interests the Orioles. Now here's the rumored kicker: The Tigers are trying to get the Orioles involved because they want shortstop J.J. Hardy, and they don't feel as though the Cubs have the necessary components to make it a two-team trade.

For this to happen, the Cubs would have to send pitching to the Orioles as part of a three-way deal.

I still don't think the Orioles are willing to part with Hardy unless they're absolutely overwhelmed by an offer. They love the left side of their infield. They're not looking to shift Manny Machado to shortstop in 2013.

Also, since the Orioles have discussed Porcello, why would they need the Cubs to get involved? Just deal directly.

Anyway, that's the word on the street. We'll see what transpires.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted last night that the Orioles are one of the teams that has pursued Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton, exhibiting "strong interest a few weeks back, but talks sputtered."

They sputtered because Arizona is asking for a lot in return, wanting to dig deep into the Orioles supply of young pitching. Dylan Bundy's name always comes up. The Orioles always resist.

The Orioles had talked to the Diamondbacks last month about another of their outfielders, Jason Kubel, but there doesn't seem to be a match.

Duquette indicated at the Winter Meetings that he didn't need another outfielder after re-signing Nate McLouth. I guess that depends on the other outfielders who are made available.

Bit slow, so this might bring up some discussion.

They want Porcello, didn't know how to word the title correctly but it says so in the article.

I mentioned it in the other thread already, but I'd like to see

    DET: Hardy+Marmol
    CHI: Porcello+Avisail Garcia+Rondon
    O's: Garza

Posted this in another thread but this may be some food for thought...

I'm guessing the Tigers and Cubs have been looking for that 3rd team to help matchup pieces and they may have possibly found one in Baltimore? So what could those pieces be?

If Baltimore is in need of a middle of the order bat and obviously a replacement SS once Hardy is dealt to Detroit, maybe Soriano and/or Barney are involved? Not sure if I would be willing to add any extra pitching to that deal to send over to Baltimore as well but who knows what else may or may not be included.

Posted this in the other thread:

I believe ABTY said that the Tigers wanted Porcello for Barney straight up, and the Cubs flat out said no to them. With the Tigers now trying to get Hardy from the O's, he basically takes the place of Barney, but will be more expensive. The O's probably don't want Porcello, but are intrerested in Garza, and the Cubs apparently have inquired on Porcello before. Obviously I would think the Cubs would get more than just Porcello if they gave up Garza. It's confusing, but trying to put it all together.

This quote is why I would think Barney would have to be involved.

Ahh, weren't they interested in Soriano too though? Maybe this ends up being a blockbuster...

I think so. But Soriano would have to accept it and who knows if he would.

Honestly, if the Cubs get Porcello, I think the odds of Garza getting dealt before the season go up a lot if he isn't part of this very deal.

It fits his criteria of an east coast team and they were also a playoff team last year. If he rejects going there, I think our odds of finding a suitable place for his needs are slim to none.

Yeah. I just wonder if he really considers them a contender or not.

Would needing to go to a contender really be one of his criteria though? I just view it as an added perk. I mean, they're close enough obviously and I could envision a ton of worse teams that fit his east coast criteria.
