Liriano Sigs with Pirates, Pavano also on Sandy's list

    December 19th, 2012 10:13 am (metsblog)

Yesterday on WFAN, Sandy Alderson said free-agent LHP Francisco Liriano is on his list of pitchers who he would consider signing to join the Mets and compete for a spot in the rotation.

According to Alderson, he feels the Mets need a pitcher capable of winning at least 10 to 12 games, who can slot in to the rotation now that R.A. Dickey has been traded the Blue Jays. Jeremy Hefner, Colin McHugh and Jenry Mejia will all be considered in Spring Training for this position, but he expects to sign a veteran free-agent or two to compete as well.

Liriano was 6-12 in 34 starts last season with a 5.34 ERA for the White Sox and Twins.

The Twins have reportedly been working to re-sign Liriano, but talks have been going ‘backwards,’ according to the Star-Tribune.

We do for depth... Liriano and Jurjens should be on Sandy's list for sure

For me I think Jurrjens is more likely to bounce back so I'd rather take a shot at him.

I like the idea of Santana and Liriano rejoicing once more.

But he isn't from San Diego, Toronto or Oakland.

Jurrgens or Liriano would be ideal for this club at this time. You can get lucky if these guys are healthy so if the price is right why not? I always said Liriano reminds me of a poor man's Johan Santana. Unite the former Twins for one season anyway.

Love the idea of bringing either guy in. Low risk, high reward deals are right up SA's alley.

Jar jar. Forgot about him. Yeah, I would take a chance on him, too.

Liriano worked really well with Santana back in the day, so maybe they'd do well together again.

We need all the veteran, serviceable arms we can find. We sorely need quality depth.

    Stupid.

Should have just signed Pelfrey and Young.

Let Pelfrey, Young, Mejia compete for the 5, 6 and 7 spots.

How much were we going to offer Pelfrey? More than $4 million plus $1.5 million in performance bonuses, including $100,000 for 150 innings, $150,000 for 160 innings, $250,000 each for 170, 180 and 190 innings and $500,000 for 200 innings?

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
