Other than that he can eat innings, Vargas is terrible.
Im pretty sure I said that they could have gotten more.

Yeah you did. I read more for Vargas instead of more than Vargas. My bad.

Morales missed one and a half+ years to injuries and has one healthy season in the majors. He's a talented hitter, but that is alot of time for a guy who is already regulated to being a 1B/DH type. Didn't even put up an .800 OPS last year either...Career .823 in 1762 PAs spread out over 7 years, about to be 30, only one year of control...Not sure how much more they could have gotten than a proven innings eater. His big advantage in this deal is that he's the name guy and he played for the team that won more.

So if Jackson comes here too, how about the remainder of the off season shakes down as follows:
Shark, B. Jackson, Villanueva (3rd baseman) + to SD for Maybin and Headley
    Sign Bourn

You can add whatever you need to the SD deal to get those guys. Maybe not top 5 prospects, but something. DeJesus can be in the deal, or DeJesus can be dealt for a prospect that could be in the deal. Anyway, something like that makes the Cubs contenders next year, IMO.
Bourn, Castro, Rizzo, Headley, Soriano, Maybin, Castillo, Barney-Not a bad line up.

Great defense with 2 center fielders, actually. And a solid starting staff. They have enough cash to make this happen and it is getting some younger players in Headley and Maybin. So if you do lose a prospect or two, you at least are getting young major league talent back.

Is Maybin on the block at all? Haven't read around. If that's the case then go get 'im Tanny!

Sounds like the pitching staff is shaping up as:

    Garza
    Samardzija
Jackson (not done yet but sounds promising)
    Baker
    Feldman/Villanueva

    Bullpen:
    Marmol
    Fujikawa
    Camp
    Russel
    Bowden/Dolis/Vizcaino
    Rondon
    Villanueva/Feldman

I wonder if they'll start Wood and/or Vizcaino in AAA so they can continue to get starts if they're able to fill the bullpen with other deals. It sounds like they could add another reliever still. That would make for a pretty average pitching staff and definitely looks, on paper, to be an improvement over last year when they were hoping and praying Volstad and Wood could turn things around.

What is really funny is I knew the fans who are not realistic would think the deal was unfair for the Cubs. Even though I realize it would take more to get those guys.

I'm interested in seeing which moves will be made next. If the Villanueva and Jackson signings get done, that will put the 40 man at 43 with not a lot of guys on the current roster that are expendable without a trade. They could try to get guys like Campana and Clevenger through waivers but some team will probably pick them up.

There is a lot on the 40 man you can DFA.

I just thought of something. With all of these pitcher signings, some stable guys, some guys with injuries but upside. And I remember reading some posts about next offseason's pitching FA isn't that great outside of Josh Johnson who has injury concerns. Even if they don't trade some guys at the deadline, maybe they are planning ahead in what might be a very starting pitching starved FA market next offseason, as a way to cash in.

Investing in "pitching futures" if you will.
