    James White's Defense

James White in my opinion is one of the best, if not the best defender on our team.

Did anyone else see him guard Lebron James when the Heat came?

Did anyone see him make Kobe's job so much tougher?

I know his offense is severely lacking, but I wish there were some type of role for him out there.

He can really lockdown the opponent's best player.

    I would keep going then.

With Shumpert out, we lack a great isolation defender on the perimeter.

I see a guy not having a clue on offense and never cutting backdoor with all the god given ability he has.

Dude, seriously? I have seen this guy cut back door so many times. Last night he cut back door and was open like four times, I was expecting someone to throw him a lob every time, but they missed him. Even Clyde was like, 'Ohhhh' one time, he was so wide open.

And I agree with the OP. I dont know if he is the BEST defender on our team, but he does give guys trouble, he can really D up.

LOL is this thread for real? He got torched by KOBE last week including a deep 3 pointer...am i missing something here?? I'd rather ronnie brewer on both offense and defense. He's supposed to be one of the most athletic players ever to step onto an NBA court..that's what scouts were saying about him when he was being drafted...we can clearly see why he hasn't made it in the nba. He was the worst signing this off season IMO

Andy, I have noticed it too. He's a pretty solid defender, but realize that with so many people on our team there is a pecking order. I think he needs to just make good use of minutes when he gets them. Obviously his offensive game is lacking, but they definitely missed him a couple of times last night.

Our problem last night was the same as the first time we faced these guys. We can't seem to keep up with them and its probably an issue we'll have against OKC (in the finals hopefully). Hopefully once we get our main guys back its less of a problem.

On a side note. I wish mods would take some kind of action against a select group of idiots that come into a thread, and there default response is to get it closed. It is downright insulting to the OP. We are discussing a player on our team! There is nothing off topic or outlandish about this. Andy might just be a little too passionate with the whole best defender thing lol. But respect that people take time out of there day to initiate this conversation for all of us. If you don't want to be a part of the conversation, its simple, leave.

    1) Kobe is the leading scorer in the NBA, he torches most people
    2) How exactly do you guard a "deep 3". That's a shot you want people to take.
    3) Ronnie Brewer, with the exclusion of a decent corner 3 is atrocious on offense
    4) I think you are missing many things

I can see you don't play basketball but the best way to guard a deep 3 after a player has picked up his dribble is to smother him with hands straight up forcing him to pass the ball to a teammate. The wrong thing to do is to give space to "leading scorer in the NBA". And yea Ronnie Brewer is atrocious but he takes open shots and slashes and hustles and sets screens, does a lot of little things on offense. I encourage you to watch James White on offense again..he looks lost on offense just like toney douglas did last year. I actually think you are missing many things

okay, so why is ronnie brewer on the team and i think tyson chandler the "defensive player of the year" is a better defender...
Jason kidd is smothering the 2 spot and j.r is a great defender IMO...
I kinda wanted white to play well here but hes a scrub and you cant polish a turd... Seems like youre rolling it in glitter my friend, , and having such a strong defensive team, and defensive minded coach good if he was as good as you think he would already have a bigger ole

Kidd, Brewer and Shump are all better wing defenders. Major hyperbole in the OP. Flight is a nice reserve guy but he's not stopping anyone's best player.
The value of elite scoring ability, by Phil Jackson:

"This is a guy, we recognize his talent, and his skill is the kind of skill and talent that gets you through playoff games where things get sticky, grind-out, and basketball becomes a force game and suddenly you need to have a player who has the capabilities of scoring with someone hanging on them in a situation thatís critical. Heís one of those players, one of the few players who can do that.Ē

If every player who let Kobe score a deep 3 was a bad defender, there wouldn't be any good defenders in the league. It seems that YOU, my friend don't play basketball if you can't realize that good offensive players are going to score during the course of a game, regardless of the defense. Kobe is one of those players.

Preach on, brother. Some posters really think they've made a funny when they post rubbish like "LOL," and that's it. If you want to contribute to a conversation, you should make sure you have something to say...

While Shump's out, Flight is a nice replacement, especially since Woody seems to have gone away from Brewer late in games, probably because of his suspect FT shooting. Kidd, as well, is a great steals guy but he's too slow to guard some of the better (younger) SGs in the league.

Speaking of best defenders, why don't we use ours more. Last year we used Shump as a stopper. When someone got off on the perimeter we stuck Shump on them. My only criticism of Woodson this year is that we don't do that. For example, when Irving was going off in the 4th JR should have been on him. He is longer, faster, stronger, and can apply more pressure then J Kidd.
