I don't think we need to rely on Kirk and Duda becoming anything. By 2014 we'll have money to spend on free agents, and the developing talent to open the window allowing Sandy to spend on multi-year contracts. No reason to assume we're going to rely on only the guys we have now.

    You may be right too.

It really isn't going to take that long. We should at least be competing for the division by 2014. Our top two prospects--Zack Wheeler and Travis D'Arnaud--are going to make their ML debuts in 2013. We're going to know where guys like Mejia and Familia fit by the time 2013 is over, as well. With the money coming off the books--as well as the new money invested in Wright beginning in 2014--Sandy has officially declared his window as opening in 2014.

This lack of multi-year contracts will end, and while he might not be eager to spend "David Wright Money," he most certainly will supplement this team with quality, long-term FA signings beginning in the winter of 2013-14.

Things get complicated if TDA and/or Wheeler and/or Harvey go bust, but there's no reason to assume they will. So if they go to plan, there's a nice foundation going forward.

There are plenty of posters who think the Mets won't spend for the next 5 years but why would they acquire these guys in hopes to get younger and setup a foundation to compete if they weren't going to spend.

Especially carrying two contracted players on the roster for 2014 and a payroll in the bottom tier of the league.

I am sure they will begin to spend in 2014 then as they improve begin to invest even more into the team.

Are we gonna see 150+ million dollar payrolls again?

Most likely not but with these guys they have been acquiring they shouldn't need to, to be a factor in the NL.

Exactly. And really, they've already begun spending. They just dropped 8/138 on David Wright.

Imagine if he could get back to that $150M payroll again though? That would change everything considerably.
