The one thing the Blue Jays have AJ Jimenez and Santiago Nessy, they don't really need another catcher.

You could say I'm the Reese Havens/Fernando Martinez for amateur athletes, I have way too much time on my hands these days.

Do you mean a Plawecki to be named later?

20 days after Opening day, unless the Mets don't care about that extra year of service time.

Just curious... Is D'Arnaud better than Yasmani Grandal?

I have to say I've been very hard on Alderson lately but this deal really is a good one for the Mets. Even if in the longhaul these prospects bust, we have to be satisfied that Sandy squeezed every ounce of talent he could out of the BJs.

Next step I would assume for this team in the future would be to use some of our excess pitching prospects to deal for an OF (maybe a 2B as well) and also use money coming off the books to boost the OF and pen.

I like getting Buck back too. He's been a consistant 2 WAR catcher in his career. Definitely a fine fill in until TDA can come up, not to mention we might be able to flip him at the deadline.

It's a sad day when Mets fans lose their Dickey.

(just wait for the headlines, it should be fun)

    OK...

    Well...

    Hmmm...

    Let me think...

    Dickey (SP)
    Thole (C)
    Prospect (Unknown Position)

    TDA (C)
    Syndergaard (P)
    Buck (C)
    Prospect (Unknown Position)
    $$CASH$$

Well of course it will all depend on who these prospects are. But the Mets wanted the top hitting prospect plus a suitable arm for Dickey. It just so happens, in this case, it is a Catcher, and in this sense the Mets also replace the extra arm the loss of Dickey will create.

It is possible Toronto inquired about Thole or the Mets dropped his name as we all know they are looking to upgrade the position (we really do not know how his name appeared). For the Mets to give up Thole they would have to replace that position with an immediate need. From Toronto's stand point, they get younger at C, and initially a cash dump. From the Mets side, Buck is a power upgrade over Thole and is no more than a stopgap anyway (much like Thole would have been).

But since Buck is older and more expensive, the Mets could have insisted that Thole was worth more to Toronto and asked for the extra prospect. Maybe Toronto wouldn't offer anything more than a warm body, but maybe floated the idea of offseting Buck's contract. By which the Mets could have said, they would offer a warm body of their own to guarantee Toronto did both (warm body prospect and cash). When in actuality all the Mets wanted was Toronto fitting Buck's bill...and all it cost them was swapping no-nothing prospects.

It would be very interesting to see how this all played out...too bad we will likely never know. But it could have happened like this.
