Dodgers Trade RHP John Ely for LHP Rob Rasmussen

    Astros Acquire John Ely
    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 19, 2012 at 1:35pm CST]
The Astros announced that they acquired right-hander John Ely from the Dodgers for minor league left-hander Rob Rasmussen. The Dodgers now have 39 players on the 40 man roster.

Ely appeared in two games for the Dodgers in 2012, but spent most of the season at Triple-A. The 26-year-old led the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with a 3.20 ERA in 168 2/3 innings. Ely, a former third round selection of the White Sox, started 18 games for the Dodgers in 2010, posting a 5.49 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 100 innings. He has just shy of one year of MLB service (167 days).

Rasmussen, 23, was a second round draft pick of the Marlins in 2010. The Astros acquired him from Miami along with Matt Dominguez for Carlos Lee this past summer. In 142 innings at Class A and Double A, Rasmussen posted a 4.25 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.

Seems like we're just freeing 40 man roster space... Maybe an indication that another move is in the works?

Maybe we just don't need him anymore with more starting pitching than teams.

Dodgers drafted Rasmussen in 2007 straight out of high school, but instead he opted to go to college (ucla), maybe the scouts see potential in him now that 5 years passed.

Ely was garbage. Career "AAAA pitcher" that cant hack it in the pros. Nothing really to lose here, if rasmussen pans out with us its just a bonus at this point.

if you search "ESPNLA.com: UCLA Baseball reacts to Rob Rasmussen's two-hitt" on youtube you can see him talk. He looks like he could be kershaw's little brother lol

Ely led the PCL in most pitching stats, i am glad to see him go not because i don't like him, but he was just never going to get a shot here, i think he could be a solid 4th starter in houston and i hope he shuts down the rangers and A's constantly

Yeah, I think Ely could be a 4th/5th guy in rotation. Better for him to go since he'll just be wasting his time in the minors otherwise.

i think he could be here, it's just we have no room, also this rasmussen guy in 5'9 while he has some decent stuff i think were looking at a future bull pen piece.

    Where would he pitch?

Our first, second and third spots in the rotation will be locked up for at least 3-6 years, Bills is still under contract and if he doesn't get injured will likely stay with us and we have Lee in the minors waiting. Where does Ely fit?

Houston is in complete rebuild mode. Ely will get a chance to be in the rotation.

He really would have never seen the light of day In LA

I never disliked Ely. But no way he's got a chance in that rotation. He could end up a solid 5th starter with Houston.

Ely sucks and is off our 40 man roster now, seems like a win for me, now go get a bullpen arm to fill that roster spot

Like this move alot. Minors got a tad bit younger. Rams maybe takes pacos spot . If paco makes team. And opens a roster spot for another potential trade or FA signing.
