Red Sox to Sign Ryan Dempster

If every player pitches to their potential and does what they should, it will probably be mid top 10 in ERA . The Red Sox are pretty close to the yankees in starting pitching depth right now believe it or not. The yankees have Kuroda, Sabathia, Hughes, and Pettite (and Nova?). I'm not entirely sure Pettite will be very dominant again (is he even pitching next year?). The Red Sox have now 7 starting pitchers (Lester, Buccholz, Doubront, Dempster, Lackey, Morales, and De La Rosa) Morales probably goes to the bullpen and will be pretty good out of there. De La Rosa probably starts in AAA after Tommy John. Lester, Buccholz, Dempster, and Doubront at the very least are capable of a sub 4 ERA if they can pitch how people expect/hope them to. Lackey is a question mark. He could be very good, or be a 5+ ERA guy, noone really knows. Though to say as a full staff, statistically speaking it's impossible they are top 7, is false. It's possible.

Dempster is not going to have a Sub 4 ERA. In the AL east, no chance.

After missing all of last year and the 2 years prior with an ERA over 4 and over 6, I don't think he will be good at all.

Since signing with Boston, Lackey's ERA has been 5.26 with a WHIP of 1.504. I'd have more confidence in Dempster than Lackey, to be honest.

I have some hope for Lackey... although I kind of wish we could see Morales or RDLR instead. I think a mid 4 from Lackey would be okay. All he has to do is not suck lol

i don't think this really helps the red sox, unless they were looking for an innings eater.

2010 - 3.85/ 1.32

i would expect something in between 2011 and 2010.

I don't know the money, but i bet boston is overpaying.

As long as its a 2 year deal, I'm okay with it.

Dempster had a sub 4 xFIP last season with Texas, plus I'd be willing to argue that the Red Sox will have better defense up the middle with Pedroia and Jose (as compared to Andrus and Kinsler)

In other news, like all pitchers he is worse against tougher competition.

I'm not a huge fan of Dempster but I hate stats like this, or when people say pitchers do better in games they win. It's like, no kidding, a guy did better when he wins, or when he faces easier lineups.

Not trying to pick on you it's just this type of argument always grinds my gears.

I like Dempster as a person. He seems cool. But this is just a dumb deal.

Dempster is 35. Anibal Sanchez is only 29. past numbers are past, Sanchez is going to be better going forward.

Dempster recently turned down an offer from Boston of $25 million over 2 years. he was said to be looking for 3 year deal around $13 million.
Dempster isn't going to be paid for what he WILL do for the Red Sox, he is going to be paid for what he has done for the Cubs. that's something I don't like about contracts, but I doubt it changes anymore soon.

I don't like this move for this team. Dempster I doubt will be someone to push the Red Sox into contention.
I like the other things like clubhouse and a veteran to help younger pitchers, but not at the price you pay for someone like Dempster. I think there were likely other pitchers they could have signed who would give them similar numbers for a lot less money.

the Red Sox would be better off rebuilding.
