Red Sox agree to one-year, $5M deal (plus incentives) with Napoli

The Red Sox and Mike Napoli have agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million with incentives that could bring the total value to $13 million, major league sources confirmed.

The incentives would be based on whether Napoli spends any time on the disabled list due to a hip injury. Napoli originally agreed to a three-year, $39 million deal in December that was held up after concerns arose with his physical.

Napoli spent the last two seasons with the Texas Rangers. He is a career .259 hitter with 146 home runs and 380 RBIs. Napoli hit .227/.343/.469 last season with 24 home runs.

The Sox have long felt the righthanded hitter would be a good fit in their lineup at first base. Napoli has been primarily a catcher in his career but has played 133 games at first base.

WEEI was first to report the news of the one-year deal.

With Napoli now settled, the Red Sox are likely to pursue a backup first baseman via trade or free agency. Their preference would be a lefthanded hitter who could also play the outfield.

You can't lose with this kind of deal, but his hip must be really bad.

.275/.350/.500 25/90 season would be awesome if he holds up.

Im actually kind of disappointed only because it's almost a guarantee he misses time this year. I mean to go from 3/$39M to 1/$5+ means something is clearly wrong. It's probably something he's going to need to have surgery on after this year, but will try to avoid with the season being so close to starting.

Well, not a ringing endorsement on his hip. Do Sox keep Salty around for cheap insurance?

Or does that hurt pitching staff and Lavarnway's development too much?

Yeah...this definitely raises some major red flags about the hip...

But even so, the nature of the contract makes this almost no risk at all for us. I like it...and healthy or not, I was not a fan of that 3 year deal.

Hearing Chris Carpenter is booted from roster, he doesn't win CY or have Closer Experience™ that's why.

The injury is not expected to keep him from being ready for Opening Day
    Rob Bradford of WEEI

Whats the deal with Seattle? are they calling up Mark Zunino or they looking for a backstop?

Zunino isn't ready to start the season at least, thats why I suggested Salty for Smoak+. Plus when Zunino comes up I'd think they want Montero to still be in the every day lineup. So then Zunino comes up and starts, Salty is the backup, and Montero is the DH and possibly 1B next year depending on where Morales/Morse end up.

As others have said this definitely raises a lot of red flags about his hip. However, there's no risk in this for us at all so I like it.
