The Hobbit as so many side stories that are mentioned but not in detail and will probably be the basis for a lot of the tangents in these 3 films.

500 pages? Maybe in granny type. The book is barely over 300.

There was alot that they left out of the LOTR movies that I would have liked to have seen (instance, the journey through the Old Forest, being attacked by Old Man Willow, meeting Tom Bombadill, the attack in the Barrow Downs which is where they get their daggers, which is connect to the Return of the King when Merry stabs the Witch King as the dagger was made by his ancient enemy). Sorry, nerd rant over, but still, while 9 movies would have been a bit much for the whole trilogy, could have been 4 or 5.

Question for those nerdy types. Why didn't they do the Hobbit before the others in the first place?

Because Jackson wanted to do the LOTR. It was his pet project that he put alot of effort into getting made (was originally going to be one movie too, that's how badly he wanted to make it). He always saw The Hobbit as a children's book and therefore had no interest, which is why he was not signed on originally to make the movie.

Totally agree. I was a little disappointed that they left the scourging of the shire out as it was one of my favorite parts of the book.

The way I understand it is that they have purchased the rights to 18 JRRT short stories and that is what they will be useing to fill the 3 movies.

yes, but that was 3 movies for three books. obviously some stuff is going to havbe to be left out (and most is included in the extended DVD editions by the way if you want to see that stuff). 3 movies from one fairly short book is a little different, since all the LOTR books are longer than the hobbit

Actually a lot of the things they added in the expanded versions weren't even in the book to begin with. But I get what you're saying.

I just got back from the theater, and I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Even though its close to 3 hours, it didn't feel long at all. Skyrim felt way longer.

In addition, Jackson is extremely faithful to the source material, you really really feel that you're reading the book. My biggest problem might have been one of their tangents thats not in the book, since it just feels like its filler material, but it still wasn't that bad.

I don't know if the theater I went to had 48FPS or not, but I didn't notice anything so it probably wasn't. All in all, it was a very good movie and really felt like it was just another one in the LOTR series. They did a good job in blending the two together, and while thats expected given the recurring characters, I can definitely see someone watching all 6 in a row without skipping a beat if they continue on this pace.
