Giants agree to $8 million deal with NL MVP

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with catcher Buster Posey to avoid arbitration, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Posey, 25, is coming off an NL MVP season in which he hit .336/.408/.549 with 24 homers and 103 RBIs. He also added the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award and an NL batting title to his accomplishments in his first season back from serious ankle/leg injuries suffered in a home-plate collision in May of 2011.

Earlier, CBSSports.com reported the Giants and right fielder Hunter Pence avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $13.8 million contract for 2013.

Arbitration-eligible players who have not yet agreed to 2013 contracts had until today at 1 p.m. ET to do. Otherwise, they will exchange figures with their current teams and might have to go before a board of independent arbitrators to determine their 2013 salaries. In that case, representatives of the player and team each argue their case, and the arbitrators then side with the player (and his requested salary) or the team (and the salary it has offered). Most disputes are settled before they reach that point, however.

Other notable 2013 deals reached Friday: Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury ($9 million), Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez ($7.3 million), Boston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan ($7.04 million), Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters ($5.5 million) and Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford ($5 million).

Was that his projected amount in arbitration? I thought I read it was probably around 6.

Not that I'm complaining as he obviously deserves much more than 8 mil. Would be interested though if the Giants maybe gave him a few mil bonus over what he would have likely got.

MLBTR projected him to earn $5.9MM in arbitration.

My guess is that the Giants did a bit more than expected to help create good relations for negotiating a long-term contract. IMO, a good move, especially if the long-term deal follows.

By the way, Posey would not bat 7th or 8th in the LAD lineup. He'd be somewhere 3rd through 5th

Pence gets 14 but Posey gets 8? Giants need to read stats before handing out contracts...
