When will Tim Duncan retire?

As I still come to grips with the fact that Duncan is producing at his highest levels since the tailend of his prime I couldn't help but wonder if the talks of Duncan's great demise have been greatly exaggerrated. His PER 36 numbers have remained comparable from a production standpoint despite the fact that his minutes have decreased. This can partly be attributed to Pop's savvy strategy of "saving" his stars by protecting their minutes in less significant regular season games.

Factoring in these developments and the knowledge that so much of his game based on fundamental skills and basketball IQ, I began to wonder how long Duncan can last. Karl Malone played until he was 40. Shaq played until he was 38. Tim Duncan is currently 36 years old. My question is simple:

When will Tim Duncan retire?

He could play for a very long time. He is in a great situation currently, playing with talented players in a system they've played in for a long time, and all the players have a lot of experience and chemistry together. Then you have a coach that limits the minutes and games for his older players. Pop really understands how to use veterans, and rely on rookies to help develop them.

He could play into his 40s I think. Which is well into his decline, but he'll be able to make that midrange shot and rebound til his kids are in the league

I think it depends if the Spurs can be competitive in the future with their stars declining. Duncan will play out his contract and if the Spurs are still contenders in 3 years maybe sign on for another year or two. He wont sign elsewhere but i dont think hell come back if the Spurs arent genuine contenders.
