From my understanding it's the opposite. They dont need to be under 189 this year but they do next year.

Why not do it a year earlier though and reap the benefits quicker? That's what I don't get. I'm sure I'm missing some part of the clause/rule though.

I just think it's when the new CBA starts?

I believe you have to hit that 189 threshold every 5 years to re-fit the tax.

But I def. could be wrong. I am so mis-informed about this new CBA.

I think the budget for 2013 is 178M or something like that so its a decent amount lower. With all the other stuff added in I'm guessing thats actual payroll of around 160M they'd have to do for next year. I imagine they just thought it'd be tough to do that and I'm guessing more so they didn't want to deny Mo, Pettitte, etc...the chance to come back for one last year. Which maybe isn't the best way to run the team but thats the Yankees.

Question. Now that Hamilton is headed to LAA, do the Rangers have enough to change Miami's stance on keeping Stanton? Would a deal centered around Profar and Olt be enough to get Stanton?

Potentially yes. That might be the best centerpieces they would get.

If I was the Rays, I'd definitely consider shipping of Wil Myers and an additional top prospect for Stanton.

Honestly if I was Jeff Loria, Myers wouldn't be enough. I'd want a cost controlled stud back. The only player I think would be a good fit in a Stanton trade would be Mike Trout. Trout and some top specs

I think this is the first trade proposal I've read where Stanton is actually being over-rated. Trout is a better all around player than Stanton. Trout + any specs would be crazy.

I agree with you but I don't think the marlins risk losing him to top specs that may not pan out. Myers, profar and olt could be busts. A Stanton trade would be very hard to get done
