There will be a RH DH/OF signed before spring training starts. Possibly Scott Hairston.

The Texas Rangers, after striking out for most of the offseason, finally are on the verge of a significant free-agent score.
The team has reached agreement with free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski on a one-year contract, according to major-league sources. The deal is pending a physical.
WOW . 1 year?????? WHY didnt we sign him! He is better than anything else out there!
and as RCS said on the other thread... I don't view any of our options even close to AJ... and Posada wasn't known as a great defensive catcher and we won many rings w him.
Romine. I'd rather have at least one fkn kid play!
Unless they free puppy!
F AJ. Oh wait...I wanted him. Ehhhh.....
Romine!

Its kinda obvious why the Yankees didn't make much of a push for Pierzynski.
- Career offensive year at age 35, right before free agency.
- 2012 OPS+ 118... 2004-2011 OPS+ 89.
- Poor defensive player.
- Last 5 years his CS% is 22.6% (lgavg is 28%)
- (-)11.5 player defensively the past 5 years according to UZR
- Offers nothing in the running game (taken the extra base 27% of the time since 2006. lg avg is around 40%..)
The Yankees, obviously, feel that Romine is healthy after last season and they feel comfortable enough to roll the dice with him.
...What a coordinated flop looks like...
Romine is a 60 day DL waiting to happen. AJ is a better option than Stewart and Cervelli. And for 1 year no less. He is an upgrade over every other option that the Yankees had, as far as I can tell. 1 year with AJ only helps our chances. And we do need help.
AJ=Posada
Romine=DL
Cervelli/Stewart=Dog piss
they sign Youk to a 1 yr 12 mil coming off a down year but they wont sign AJ for 1 yr 7.5 mil coming off a great year, and catcher is arguably the most important position of need (and position in general)
You don't give contracts based off past performances. You give them based on potential future performance. Well, that's how it should be anyway (usually its not).
Going forward, in my opinion, there is a very decent chance that Cervelli/Romine out-perform Pierzynski.
Romine has had back issues which is apparently in the past. The Yankees are high on him and he has the ability to match Pierzynski's production going forward. Maybe not AJ's 2012 production but he can certainly match AJ's production from 2008-2011 when he was slightly above a replacement level player.
Add that neither of us know for a fact if Romine is an automatic DL candidate. We can speculate all we want but we are neither toothsayers nor chiropractors.
This is kind of a transitional period anyway. Might as well see if Romine can be at least an average everyday catcher or if he can even stay relative healthy throughout the season.
Same thing with Cervelli (given his concussion history). He doesn't have bad tools, just bad habits defensively which can be corrected. Plus unlike Stewart or Bobby Wilson he isn't useless with the bat.
