You could put Mike Schmidt in his prime at 3B and this still isn't going to be a good team. It's basically a $2 million bet. If he truly is healthy and rebounds he'll definitely have trade value given his low cost. If he sucks you can easily absorb the cost and replace him with someone on the farm. If Vitters destroys it in Spring Training you can give him a shot again and carry Stewart becaus eof the low price tag. Bottom line is it's a relatively low cost move, has some upside and does nothing to tie our hands in terms of younger player development or in 2014 and beyond when this team should be ready to compete.

RT @PWSullivan Stewart returns on non-guaranteed $2 million, 1-year contract. If released in spring training, Cubs off hook.

Third baseman Ian Stewart agreed to a one-year deal Thursday to return to the Cubs.

Stewart will earn $2 million with $500,000 in incentives. But a source said the money is not guaranteed, and he can be released if he doesn't make the team in spring training and is released.

General manager Jed Hoyer was unavailable for comment, but a source confirmed the signing. Stewart also confirmed the signing in a tweet, thanking Cubs fans for their support.

Hoyer said at the just-completed winter meetings that the Cubs were talking to Stewart after non-tendering him one week ago. Stewart is coming off left wrist surgery that ended his 2012 season in June.

That completes the search for another third baseman. The Cubs looked at Jeff Keppinger, who signed with the White Sox for three years and $12 million.

    At least there's a loophole.

Well. I guess the non-guaranteed thing is "better" but even as someone who is totally okay with waiting another year...its going to make this team hard to watch next year.

Ian Stewart I will defend you til the day you die. On his whole wrist thing, I think it was they found tiny chip/spur or whatever that they didn't find before. Not sure if it is the exact same thing as a fracture or if he did fracture it years ago. But I am willing to give him one more shot since it's obvious we are going for the #1 pick next year. Especially if Valbuena is the alternative. Atleast Stewart has the small possibility of upside.

Figgins wouldn't make sense to me. Yes he sucks overall, but is even worse against LHP than RHP. If we were bringing in a backup/platoon guy, surely it would be someone who can hit lefties.
