If the Mets wanted to "buy" a World Series

OK, if we were living in Fantasyland and the Mets had no financial issues and the owners inherited the spirit of George Steinbrenner...who do you think the Mets would need to sign to buy a 2013 World Series?

Sign Josh Hamilton and Micheal Bourn, keep R.A.Dickey and...what else?

I know this is another ridiculous fantasy thread but I'm seriously interested in seeing who you think the Mets would need to if they went Steinbrenner bezerk this offseason.

Hamilton, Bourne, Brian Wilson, and every other reliever on the market would give us a shot

Why in the world would you all want Micheal Bourn????? He stinks, and is overrated. Even if the Wilpons allowed for a legit spending spree to win titles, Micheal Bourn should never be near our list.

I say sign Hamilton, Brian Wilson, any other relievers I can't think of right now, AND TRADE for Joe Mauer and King Felix WITHOUT trading away Dickey.

Do that and you have at least 2 of the next 3 world series titles.

LOL at you saying we'd "have" AT LEAST 2 of the next 3 WS titles. That's a joke to say cuz it's obviously not true. There's been better Yankee teams that haven't won and TEX has had recent teams better than that too and haven't won.

Joe Mauer and Josh Hamilton in our lineup would give David Wright a ton of fastballs. Remember the last time David Wright was in a lineup with two stars (Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran)???????? Wright had career numbers. Once those two left, Wright fell off one level. Putting Wright back in a lineup with two high avg. hitting stars would get Wright back to megastar level. That would be a tough lineup to contend with. I didn't even mention the fastballs Ike Davis would see.

Dickey and King Felix would make us tough to be in any playoff series.

If my suggestions were taken seriously, it would be hard to see how we don't at least make it to 2 of the next 3 world series.

Of course.........theses are the Mets, lol........

You can count on Bourn for 3 to 5 WAR. That doesn't stink. It's well above replacement. Replacement stinks. Any argument that begins with "Michael Bourn stinks" is automatically discredited.

Jayson Werth had a 4.2 and a 4.3 WAR the two years before he was signed to be a Washington National.

Carl Crawford had a 6.6 WAR the year before he was signed to be a Boston Red Sox, and was a ~4 WAR player in the years before that.

How did those contracts and signings turn out?????

It's not fair to compare Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth to Michael Bourn.

Werth was a product of Citizen's Bank park and once he moved to a more difficult park to hit home runs in (81 games a year) he got exposed. The pressure from such a large deal also got to him to some extent.

As for Crawford, a lot of people around him said coming to a big market where there was a ton of pressure would be a bad idea. Even some of his teammates from Tampa felt that way. In all fairness to him though, he had one bad season and wasn't able to recover from it due to being injured and then traded last year. Saying that, that contract was also unbelievably ridiculous from the start.

Bourn won't get that type of money/ that amount of years, neither is there any indication he can't handle pressure or playing in a bigger market. His skill set is also different than Werth's. I don't see him being a bad investment for 2 or 3 years but again not for 5+ years.

Any team that gives him that long will regret it by 2016.

Neither player is named Michael Bourne. There is no correlation. I could easily choose two players with 3.0 or better WAR values who maintained their production. Regardless, there is no basis for saying Michael Bourn stinks. If you want to ssy he is overrated, you may be able to do that, but being overrated doesn't mean he stinks.

Ok. I'll agree to that. He doesn't stink, but he is overrated, and not someone I would want to pursue should Wilpon open his pockets to get titles. We can do way better.

Bourn would become the best everyday player on our team not named David Wright if we were to sign him. Buy a clue.

Sign Hamilton, Greinke, Bourn, any decent relievers. Trade Wheeler, Familia, and even Harvey if you have to for Felix.

What's sad is that even if we succeed in making these moves, we're still weak at catcher, 2B, SS, and one of the corner OF spots. This team isn't even close to competing and that sucks. LOL

That would be a bad idea. Though Steinbrenner won initially, his stewardship was marked by controversy and embarassment to the degree that Yankee fans chanted "George must go! George must go!" It wasn't until George was banned from baseball that the Yankees gained respect and consistency. The spirit of George Steinbrenner is not what you want. What you want is his money, and qualified and competent people to decide how to spend it.
