Chicago Tribune: Yankees In Talks To Sign AJ Pierzynski

    Phil Rogers @ChiTribRogers

According to executives with other teams, the Yankees are in talks to sign A.J. Pierzynski. Certainly seems like a good fit for both sides. #Twitter

    CBS Sports Reports

Following the loss of free-agent catcher Russell Martin to the Pirates, the Yankees are in the market for a starting catcher. That search has, sensibly enough, led them to A.J. Pierzynski . Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Yanks have engaged Pierzynski in contract talks.

The 35-year-old Pierzynski is coming off a career year at the plate: .278/.326/.501 with 27 homers. It's likely that Pierzynski will regress back toward career norms with the bat, but even if he does he still figures to be an asset. That's because Pierzynski is a skilled defensive catcher, and he's also quite durable by the standards of the position (he's been on the DL only once in his career, and that was the result of being struck by a pitch).

As well, Pierzynski's left-handed swing could play quite well in Yankee Stadium, especially if he's able to maintain the jump in fly-ball rate that he enjoyed last season. On top of all that, he's not going to command a lengthy deal, so he's an ideal placeholder for the contending Yankees.

I would love this, especially for a one year deal.

Its going to take at least 2 years...IMO. The deal makes sense for both sides, just not crazy about it. Why not wait until the deadline and make a trade for someone legit?

Pierzynski is better than Russell Martin by a ton and was born in New York

I agree . he is a much better player. for a one year deal to try and bridge to the prospects would be a very good move

I like it. It was the only logical move after Martin left considering we weren't in on Napoli

    Love this..

Was the no-brainer choice from the beginning. Get this done ASAP. Would have gladly swapped him for Martin. Better hitter, and better catcher, regardless of age. Has a rep for being an ***hole, but who cares, maybe we need some guys like that around..

Glad you guys agree, I was bashed by some people for wanting AJ. I've seen a ton of sox games and think he'd be a great fit. I'd even go 2 years with him.

Not as excited as most others seem to be but he was clearly the best guy available in FA.

I guess this is the route to go if they can't swing a trade.

I would give him 2 years as well. Couldn't hurt.

    Yes it could.

Two years for him is a bad move.

We should sign him, Hamilton, Youk, Swisher, and Wilson to go along with Arod and Joba. That would be the funniest clubhouse to watch in all of baseball

    Welcome to KC, Miss Kacie!
