Red Sox sign Victorino to 3 year $39M deal

i dont get this at all. i dont get what cherington and the sox are doing at all... they don't seem to realize that they WILL NOT WIN this year, mike napoli and shane victorino are not going to change that. They have a ton of money to work with after the dodger trade, it doesn't mean you spend it on players that aren't worth the contract. napoli isn't so bad, but this contract is god awful. a 32 year old outfielder who is declining in every aspect of his game, and your stuck with him now for three years. If the red sox truly want to win this year, they bite the bullet and sign hamilton for four years, all it would cost is one more year and about 10 million more dollars a year, which they could have easily afforded. I hate what they are doing- they shouldve just seen what they had in kalish, lavarnway, iglesias and their other prospects. this went from a terrible team to a mediocre team, they are still not a winning team. I could be wrong, im not a GM clearly, but this approach is utterly confusing to me.

Victorino is not garbage, he just wasn't as good as advertised, Dodgers gave up something for him. If you go by value, he will at least reach the 10-12m mark. Still don't like him in RF, though. We need a big bat there. But even if we move Ellsbury, JBJ is not too far away and then a lock in CF; so Victorino would go to RF in 2013 anyway.

Does that mean Brentz is on his way out?

I think everyone is just upset that we didn't sign one of the big names like JH or NS right now.

Looking at what the market has been so far, this is actually a pretty fair deal. Although he loses some value by being played in RF, you have to account for the fact that FAs always get overpaid - its one of the facts of business. If he can average about 2.0 WAR for the next 3 seasons (which is very possible since last year his worse he had over 3) I would consider this a good signing, given that it seems like the cost of 1 win in FA is creeping towards 6 million per. Signing Victorino buys time for some of the youngsters to develop (especially if ellsbury leaves next year), and he didn't cost a draft pick to sign.
