Explanation: This team needs pitching, bad. Edwin Jackson isn’t anything amazing, but he is relatively young and will eat a good amount of innings. Gavin Floyd, acquired from Chicago, is another new arm in the rotation. He is in a contract year, so I expect him to perform well. Roy Oswalt provides excellent value for 6 million assuming he can bounce back from last year - he will provide quality innings at the bottom of the rotation when someone inevitably goes on the DL. Lackey starts the year in AAA to work on his form - like Oswalt, he will fill in when someone goes down. Bard and Morales start in AAA, but can be called up for when more pitching depth is needed. The bullpen looks to be excellent this year; Tazawa and the newly signed Uehara have the setup roles locked down.
The biggest free agent signing is obviously the new starting left fielder, Josh Hamilton. He provides a big bat right in the heart of the order, and makes this lineup, very, very dangerous. Top to bottom, this lineup is stuffed chock full of talent. At the catcher position, Lavernway takes over for Salty – but Ross and Napoli can fill in for him if he starts to struggle. Jonny Gomes provides a big utility bat off the bench.
Even with all the signings, the Red Sox still will have flexibility for next year, because guys like Oswalt, Floyd, and Ellsbury are all only signed through this upcoming year. All in all, I expect that this team would be very competitive in the AL East.
