La. Tech has decided not to play in a bowl game this year because it didn't want to play rival school ULM in the Indy Bowl. Yes, seriously.

Not exactly true. The Independence Bowl gave them a deadline before LA Tech was due back to hear from two other bowls, so they turned that down hoping to get a bid from one of those.

I'm pretty sure all the schools in the conference get a share of the combined pool of bowl money, at least that's how most conferences do it. Exactly how much it might cost them is a good question.

Actually, schools typically lose money in the short run by attending a bowl game. The reason why schools still choose to go to a bowl is due to the hope of building a stronger fanbase that will drive future revenues for schools.

I'm pretty sure all the schools in the conference get a share of the combined pool of bowl money, at least that's how most conferences do it. Exactly how much it might cost them is a good question.

The schools often lose money because they are forced to purchase an allotment of the tickets and usually are unable to resell those tickets to recoup their investment. Meanwhile the teams that don't even go to a bowl game get the same payout from that bowl than the team actually playing in the bowl game.

For example the year that Auburn won the BCS championship they lost $781,825 because they were unable to resell the tickets at value and also had to payout bonus money to coaches and staff.

That is at face value. But you have to consider the value of the free advertisements that these programs gain by playing in these bowl games. Think about how much more exposure Northern Illinois is gonna get by playing in a BCS bowl game than staying at home or going to say the Little Caesars bowl.

It also is an extra game for your players and more practice sessions allowed by the NCAA. James Franklin said that today on the radio that was the biggest thing for him about going to a bowl game was that it gave him 15 more official practices to work on his players towards next season.

Imagine going 9-3 and having one of the top offenses in the country sitting at home waiting to see who you are playing in your last game. Then you find out that you are done.

They actually will make more money by staying at home and getting a share of the other teams bowl money without having to spend a dime.

I'll just throw this out there because I didn't see anybody else say it, but Bowls are big for recruiting. They're the last time kids get to see the school play before signing day and really during the fall kids have a lot of distractions with their own HS teams and also all the other games on. But around New Years kids are out of school, there are less games on, ect. It's really a good showcase for the program especially if you can win.
