Yankees have "very strong" interest in Keppinger

The Yankees have very strong interest in free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger, tweets Yahoo's Jeff Passan. The team met with his agent yesterday, as Alex Rodriguez's injury has accelerated their timetable. Keppinger is recovering from a significant injury in his own right, a broken fibula, but it hasn't seemed to affect free agent interest much.

Mike Francesa and Sweeney Murti like the idea of Youkilis and are talking about it now.
Again, I don't mind who the Yankees bring in as long as they bring in a replacement.
Corner Infield help is such a big need for this team. Keppinger would be just fine.

Can someone please explain the infatuation with Keppinger? He stinks. Had a career year last year and has amassed a 1.8 WAR in EIGHT seasons.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the bidding for free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger is currently at two years and $8 million.

It looks like a bargain in comparison for Marco Scutaro, who is reportedly getting offers in the range of three years and $24 million. Keppinger, who turns 33 in April, is coming off a season where he batted .325/.367/.439 with nine homers, 40 RBI and an .806 OPS for the Rays. The Yankees are rumored to have strong interest.

2 years at 8 million? How can you pass up an offer that reasonable. Make this happen.

    DerekJeterDan
In 52 ABs against Boston he hit .327 with a .905 OPS and a .386 OBP
In 48 ABs against the Yankees he hit .250 with a .593 OPS and a. 280 OBP.
He's destined to be a Yankee.

You are right. He really does stink. It is bad enough that they may be talking to
washed up, 'Kevin You kill us' but Cashman is an idiot if he pursues Keppinger.
So far we have done zero.

The guy had a .325 BA and a .806 OPS for a backup INF last year.

    He doesn't suck..

Keppinger can also play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base which gives the Yankees options on any given day.

Ok. You are right. He is great and we should do anything to get him. Thanks.

He's not great but he is a viable option while A-Rod is out.

A platoon of Keppinger/Chavez (which the latter i am sure will re-sign) can be effective at 3rd base.

It's a smart move if the money is right.

How is the traffic at the mall on Flatbush Ave near the Belt Pkwy. entrance?

Exactly, this is the kind of guy you want to be a stopgap for a hurt player. Now granted, we dont know if Arod will be coming back. However, I will operate under the assumption that he will be back by July and as such, Keppinger is the perfect person to man the position until then.

He can play multiple positions so you have the flexibility to move him around when you give other guys off days. You also have the ability to stick him at 3rd once Arod is back and youre giving him time at DH. Its just a solid move. You want a guy that gives you different choices when youre creating your lineup. He does just that and at a reasonable price.
