The Yankees confirmed on Monday afternoon that Alex Rodriguez will have hip surgery in January to repair a torn labrum and bone impingement, and to correct a cyst.
The procedure will take 4-6 months of recovery time, meaning A-Rod can already be ruled out for the start of the 2013 campaign and could be absent until late June. It's a tough blow to the Yankees, who owe the 37-year-old third baseman a whopping $114 million in salary over the next five seasons. They're sure to trade for or sign a third baseman within the next couple of weeks.

something I have to wonder. why was this not known about at the end of the season back in October? maybe he could have potentially had this surgery in December or even November? sooner surgery, sooner return.
this isn't just this time, it seems like something that happens every year. players wait and have surgery mid way through the offseason instead of the beginning.

It's his left hip this time, after being his right hip in 2009.

Age is catching up to A-Rod but that's to be expected considering the position he plays.
