Bloomberg - Microsoft Said to Plan Next Xbox for 2013 Holiday Season

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-1...ay-season.html
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will release the next version of its Xbox video-game machine, the top-selling console, in time for the holidays next year, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

The new device is planned for Thanksgiving and Christmas sales, said the people, who declined to be identified because the product road map is confidential. The software maker hasn’t decided whether to unveil the new Xbox at an industry event such as the E3 show in June, or a separate event devoted solely to the machine, one of the people said.

The new version will debut a year after Nintendo Co. (7974)’s brand-new Wii U, which went on sale Nov. 18 in the U.S. Sony Corp. (6758) is also readying an update to its PlayStation console. In the meantime, Microsoft is still trying to squeeze out sales of of the current model Xbox 360, selling 750,000 over the week around Thanksgiving, surpassing company expectations.

That was almost twice as many shipments of Nintendo’s Wii U console, which went on sale that same week. That device, the first major new console since 2006, is a high-definition machine offered in two versions costing about $300 to $350 with a 6.2- inch (16-centimeter) touch-screen controller called the GamePad.

Microsoft Xbox spokesman David Dennis declined to comment yesterday.

While Xbox 360 had a strong Thanksgiving week, there are signs the console market is overdue for updates to boost sales, which have been declining. U.S. retail sales of video-game software, hardware and accessories dropped 25 percent in October from a year earlier to $755.5 million, according to researcher NPD Group Inc. While Microsoft has led in console sales in the U.S. for the 22 months through October, its monthly sales have been declining, NPD said.

Since the release of the Xbox 360 in 2005, the gaming market has changed, as casual games played on tablets and phones gain in popularity. Microsoft introduced full-body motion controls to console gaming with the Kinect. More than 40 million of the 70 million Xbox 360 customers also have Xbox Live online subscriptions, many of which are used to watch TV and movies, rather than play games.

Microsoft shares fell 1.2 percent to $26.62 at the close in New York, making it the worst performer in the member-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Index. The stock has gained 2.5 percent this year.

Doesn't surprise me. Both the next xbox and playstation will be unveiled at E3 next year and will have a holiday release in 2013.

They've been keeping it a secret so there will still buyers for the 360 this Christmas. Sucks for those people

That might be the time to switch from playstation to xbox for me. My ps3s are always breaking, not sure how reliable the xboxs are but i'm at the point where it doesn't even matter. Anything but another Sony console.

I and most others have the opposite problem.

i just have no luck. I've had 3 ps3s and all have been sent in for maintenance, and i barely played them. Mostly just watch movies but i bought a separate blu-ray player now and this ps3 seems to be holding up better. 5 months now lol but i'm still done with them once the xbox comes out.

ehh, whatever works. I had my first PS3 for 5 years before it crapped out. I got a new one and after a year its still great.

Me and my brother have gone through 3 or 4 360's and we purchased ours late (2008-2009)

I dont know what Sony is going to do with their next gen console, but im probably going to end up favoring it over microsofts. I think the kinnect is cool, its just not my thing. Also more shooters on xbox than anything else. Im not a big fan of shooters. I enjoy a lot of those wacky out of left field japanese games that come from sony's japanese studios and most of the big name titles are cross platform anyway. Its a matter of specs and brand IMO.

Hm let's see what happens. Leaning more and more in the direction of a small Gaming rig instead of consoles. Steams Big Screen UI looks nice and I could see me just using that as a launcher.

I have the same ps3 since they released it with the MGS4 pack as ps2 backwards compatible. It's about 4-5 years old now.

Not a single problem. Been through 3 xboxes. Pretty much ditched the console entirely.

But....this just goes to show you how meaningless one person's experience is.

    This x1000

I'll be getting sony's console mostly because the SMT series is nearly entirely PS based outside of a few DS games.

99% of stuff is cross platform anyways and the stuff that is xbox exclusive (Halo, GoW) I couldn't give two ***** about and am not interested in playing.

I learned from my mistake this generation by purchasing a Console on launch, I'm not doing that again. I plan on waiting a year to see what the game library for each console starts to look like and then make a decision. Hopefully by then a price drop will happen by then as well.
