Red Sox sign Napoli to 3 year deal $39M deal

NASHVILLE -- According to a major league source, the Red Sox are closing in on an agreement with free agent Mike Napoli. The agreement is believed to be for three years.

Though he struggled to a .227 average with a .343 OBP, .469 slugging mark and .812 OPS in 2012, Napoli represented one of the top free agent options for the Sox, both because of his history of consistent offensive production (.259/.356/.507/.863 career line) -- demonstrating both middle-of-the-order power and considerable plate discipline -- and because the Rangers did not make him a qualifying offer, thus meaning that the Sox will not lose a draft pick for signing him.

Napoli figures to be the Red Sox' primary first base option.

98.5 verifies, says Sox officials talking like it's a done deal.

    For 3 years? How about $40.5M for 3? That's $13.5M x 3.

6/27/09: “We expect [Rondo] to play by the rules and be a leader as a point guard. We need him to be more of a leader,” Ainge said. “There were just a couple situations where he was late this year, I don’t know if he was sitting in his car, but showed up late and the rest of the team was there. We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

I'd love to see this wrapped up today so they can focus on their other holes. I can't wait to see what the rest of the offseason will look like after the Winter Meetings this week.
    Perfection.

Yes, they are paying more per year to get him wrapped up for only 3 instead of 4, so I expect something in the 12-13m neighborhood. 3/36 sounds good to me. My first prediction of 3/33 is probably too low.

I guess it depends on how well the agent sold the interest in Napoli at 4 years.... 3 for 33 would be a pretty fine deal. I'm also factoring in the Gomes/overpay effect to influence other FA to take a close look at the Sox.

They also could have sold him on an everday job with an opportunity at some time catching. With his power to left it makes sense. But, this has been said to many free agents before. I prefer Napoli > to LaRoche. So getting this done is a solid move by BC.

I'm thinking 3 at 12.5M per. Good news to me and three years would be the most important part to me.
