I just don't see Giancarlo as a fit.
The team is rebuilding or is in a brige year, it would wreck the minors, turning it from one of the best systems, to one of the worst. It would obviously require Xander + Barnes + a ton more.
I don't know why you would want that. I would take my chances with 4 or 5 good prospects over Stanton. Especially with this team.
I don't see Ben going after him.
I suppose it depends on how many prospects one feels that Sox need to move onto the roster as to whether they could afford to go after Stanton. If as you seem to think the Sox are going to need to move a fair number of those prospects onto the big club's roster in the next 2-3 years, yes maybe it would be too expensive to go after Stanton. OTOH, if one feels that the Sox aren't all that far from contention and a huge piece like a Stanton would really move the team forward, maybe he would be worth the cost.
I don't disagree. But I think that you should amend it to say that great pitching wins championships. And while most wouldn't argue that the Sox need a true ace, aces don't grow on trees and they're almost never available for trade unless a team is desperate to trade a soon-to-be free agent ace to get more than a comp draft pick. Price might be the next such ace to become available, but I just don't see the Sox getting him for anything less than just about the top half dozen prospects in their farm system, because it'd be an in-division trade.
OTOH, trading for a Stanton would be like trying to get a young Manny (production wise) into this lineup, which shouldn't be sneezed at.
Its close between him and Trout for me as the most valuable position player to have on your team. There's definitely not a lot of players I'd rather have at all. Strasburg, Kershaw, maybe Price are the only ones. King Felix/Verlander i would have to say are less desirable because of age.
What about Mike Carp?

Stanton is the player that you HOPE most of the top prospects will turn into and he's the kind of kid you could build around. Elsewhere I've suggested something like Buchholz, Middlebrooks, Bogaerts, Ranaudo, and another piece. I think we'd need to include a couple of MLB pieces (hence Buchholz/Middlebrooks) to satisfy MLB scrutiny. Losing Bogaerts would hurt but I'd take the certainty of Stanton over the unproven Bogaerts.
You'd have Stanton for four seasons and have created space for RDLR and/or Webster. Works for me.
