Schierholtz Moving Toward Deal; Yankees In Lead

Having generated plenty of interest since hitting the free agent market last week, Nate Schierholtz is making "good progress" toward a new deal, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. Olney adds that the Yankees are the early favorites to land the 28-year-old (Twitter links).

Schierholtz was traded by the Giants to the Phillies in the deadline deal that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco. For the season, the outfielder hit .257/.321/.407 in 269 plate appearances. Despite a potential arbitration cost of around $1.6MM, according to MLBTR's projections, the Phillies elected not to tender Schierholtz a contract for 2013.

Hughes has been around since May 2007 in the majors.

Joba since August 2007.

Theyve had their chances.

I'm not saying trade them outright but I would certainly prioritize a Lee for 3 years over them and Nova as well. We passed on Haren who wouldve fit the one year mold perfectly.

I dont think we should pass this up. It unloads a troublesome offensive player (consistancy, not power, that is) and it gives relief to a still somewhat fragile rotation. CC was very spotty last year and who knows age wise what Pettitte will bring to the table.

This rotation is one injury away from a shambles if we are not careful and I believe the old baseball axiom goes something like "you can NEVER have enough pitching."

If you want to give the kids a chance, give Gardener a chance in OF but I wouldnt so easily dismiss Lee.

You are kidding, right? Lee is set to make $25 mil in 13, 14 and 15. $27.6 club option in 16 or a 12.5 mil buyout. I bet with Cash made that move and it blows up because 1- he is old and 2- Yanks are strapped that they have to let Cano go to make the $189, you would make a thread to fire Cashman. I do like Lee but that for that. For what Hughes has provided since 2007 at the cost to the Yanks, dont you think he was good? Everyone cries for homegrown and kids to step up. He is one I would take a risk on and lock him up (5 -50). Joba got screwed but when he came back, his stuff had movement. I can see him replacing Mo. I really do. You know D-Rob cant. The only way the Yanks can make the $189 is to get kids to step up. That means Adams, Hughes, Joba, Phelps and others need to make an impact.

I can see him being traded as well. Of course, then we will have threads like the one when we traded Ian Kennedy when he was doing well for the D-backs an up for a Cy young.

If Joba ever went to the NL and became a stud starter, the backlash would be nuts.

If Hughes pulls a Kennedy, people won't care that much. Kinda like.....Kennedy.

I think people undervalue Hughes. He pitches in the best division in baseball. He will kill if he goes to the NL. Sure, he is not the next best thing since slice bread but I think he is a good #3. How many other pitcher that were good until they came to NY? Can you say Pavano and Vasquez?
