Going from very, very good starter to average starter is alot more reasonable than expecting some nobody to make himself a somebody while the team tries to win. Those two players aren't even bad ideas...It's the same logic that got the Cardinals Beltran and Berkman, both who were supposedly finished when signed (though I guess Beltran had proven he wasn't beforehand). Yankees got a strong year out of Chavez. Cubs used this logic on Edmonds in '08...Rays do it all the time signing guys like Cliff Floyd, Matsui, Damon, and any other former star veteran who would want to give them a shot...Yankees and A's did it with Colon...Brandon McCarthy wasn't a top ML star, but he was a stud in the minors with video game numbers as a starter and finally hit.

The Nationals probably care more about what they can mine out of the still not old former higher end starter than they do about paying him 8 figures for one year. While it's cute and kind of you to care about their wallet for them, it's probably not going to hurt them.

Yeah, that's too much, and I don't even like Lake that much.

I think Lake has pretty significant trade value because his tools remain intriguing and teams will want to believe they can get him to harness them. He could easily be the secondary piece that pushes a blockbuster package over the top.
