I wish we would have kept Reyes. I loved watching him play. Can't say I'd invite him over to dinner. He looked creepy. But that's his right to do so. Never understood the gangsta subculture look. Never really understood the hippies either.

How about how he carried the Mets offense for the whole 1st half this year? Did we forget that he posted a line of .351/.441/.563/1.004 in the first half this year?

...and that was without guys like Reyes, Beltran and Wright around him, nobody was even close to that kind of production on the Mets and obviously the minute he stopped hitting at that pace the Mets stumbled.

For the record here are the 2nd half numbers of those 4 guys in 2008

Carlos Delgado .303/.386/.606/.991, 21 homers, and 63 RBI
Carlos Beltran .307/.395/.534/.928, 12 homers and 46 RBI
Jose Reyes .289/.345/.459/.804
David Wright .330/.406/.582/.988, 16 homers, 54 RBI

Funny how things are remembered, David Wright was just as productive as Delgado was the 2nd half of 2008. Heck, Beltran was pretty damn good himself too, sorry, but Delgado did not carried the offense on his shoulder on the second half of that year. He had some huge hits, but as always it was those 4 guys doing all the damage for the Mets while their pen imploded and staff went only 5 innings or so.

I think the whole notion of "carrying" a team is overblown. ...nobody really does it over a full season. But if we are going to talk about stretches within a season, I don't see how Wright's first half of 2012 wouldn't qualify, but Delgado's 2008 would...especially given the team's around those guys

No one player can carry their team alone. This is not NBA or NFL.

Wright is an elite 3rd baseman, and his value to the Mets goes beyond his salary or production on the field.

What we need to do is make ourselves better now.

No one player carries a team alone in any sport, particularly the NFL.

Me too. And its sucks that the last few years when we did have them on the team (or at least 3 of the 4) we could never get them all healthy at the same time.

Maybe not alone because it's obviously a team game, but a Lebron or elite QB can win have a large say in how games are determined from game to game. Can't say that about anyone in baseball because players fail so often.

Difference is in football and basketball (is that still around) is that your superstar can touch the ball on every play. In baseball your superstar bats 4-5 times a game or pitches every 5 days. Other teams can work around them. You can't work around LeBron or Drew Brees. You can give the ball to Lebron, Brees has the ball at the start of the play. The Angels have to wait for Pujols to come up and then hope someone is on base. If Dickey pitched yesterday, he is useless today. Even a goalie can carry a hockey team (only player in sports that plays every minute).

Elite QBs aint carrying their teams. QB is nothing without his WRs and a good defense
