I don't get much about this story. I guess I don't get why he'd make it up as an angle to bolster his image. It's not like he wasn't already being projected as a very good character person or a high draft pick. I hate to say it like this, but the grandma angle was "working" good enough as is. This is not to say I believe him, I just don't buy that angle specifically.

I don't think he knew. But he did lie about some aspects of their "relationship" obviously.
I mean if they were going to fake a MAJOR news story like this, you think they would have covered their tracks better.
