Why isn't that a good idea?
1. we save MONEY
2. we get back pieces...potentially a legit young starting caliber position player.
Whats the sense in not eating his contract and keeping him? What's his value to us for 2013? Help us win 80 games instead of 70? If that?
If we deal Johan, it will be to save money only. We will not get any pieces for him other than maybe a Adrian Rosario type. According to Fangraphs, we've only gotten $52.2M worth of the Johan investment, so that blows.
He's not going to pitch to a $20M level next year so we might as well deal him for as much cash as possible.

If he pitches like he was pitching last season before he got hurt around the trade deadline, and doesn't have some stupid innings pitched massive option like K-rod did, we can get much more than Adrian Rosario...
A teams in playoff contention, fighting for a wildcard...needs to strengthen their rotation and there is a 3 era type pitcher who's contract comes off the books in a couple month on the block...they would give up a very valuable piece for us.
Why not, we're going to be awful anyway. If we're going to suck, at least we should see if Mejia or Familia have any future as starters. Have Familia and Mejia battle it out for the 5th starter in Spring Training, and roll w/ one of them for 13 - 18 starts til Wheeler is ready. Worst case scenario Mejia or Familia is awful for us in 13-18 starts and we move one of those guys back to the bullpen once Wheeler comes up, or Mejia/Familia does well and we have a 6 man rotation once Wheeler comes up.

Seriously?
Really?
Isn't it obvious?
It's been reported that the Mets expect the payroll at best to be 100 mil(taking in account arbitration and resigning Dickey and Wright). That means no shot of getting decent outfielders or a catcher. Even if we move the likes of a Niese or Dickey for an outfielder, it would set us a step back to make a step forward.
Outside of Dickey and Niese, we have concerns question marks at everyone in our rotation. Gee and Santana are coming injuries; and Harvey(he dominated in his 10 or so starts, but he has to do it over a full season) and Wheeler are question marks. This team's success depends on a number of "hopes". We "hope" that Wheeler and Harvey play well. We "hope" that 3 of the 4 of Duda; V-Spin, Kirk, and MDD can provide a competent outfield. We "hope" that Mejia; Familia, and/orHefner can step in for us, once 2 or more starters get injured. Good teams like the Rays; Cards, Yanks, and the Giants don't have too many "hopes". Combine the previous factor along w/ our mediocre front office, than you have a recipe for another 73 - 78 win season.
