the new york yankees and left-hander andy pettitte have finalized a contract for next season for $12 million, plus awards bonuses, sources told espn the magazine's buster olney wednesday.

The contract is a substantial raise from the $2.5 million pettitte earned this past season.

    Also:

Yankees designated C Eli Whiteside for assignment.

The move creates space on the Yankees' roster for Andy Pettitte, who re-signed on Wednesday. Whiteside recently inked a one-year, $625,000 deal with New York and should remain with the club as organizational depth.

No reason why he shouldn't. The injury last season was a fluke.
