Mets sign Tim Byrdak to minors deal

The Mets announced they have signed LHP Tim Byrdak to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training.

Mike Silva was the first to report the deal on Twitter.

Byrdak, 39, had surgery in early September to repair an anterior capsule tear in his left shoulder, as well as as surgery to repair a torn ligament in his knee.

“We are confident that Tim will experience a full recovery and be able to continue his Major League career,” Sandy Alderson said after the surgery.

Byrdak made 56 relief appearances in 2012, during which he went 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. He gave up 18 hits, 18 walks and 34 strikeouts while giving up 15 earned runs and lefthanders hit .154 for the year against him.

I would've though he would want to be on the first bus out of here. I guess nobody else would want to take a chance on him.

Byrdak's biggest problem (other than his injury) has been that he is a lefty specialist, but his manager didn't use him as such.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

This I do not get, why sign a guy who is 38 and might not pitch this year even if it's tp a minor league deal?

The signing is more of a thank you to Byrdak. This gives him access to use the team's facilities and doctors to rehab and gives him a venue to return to if he has anything left in the tank. If not, it's a minor league deal that ultimately was just a nice gesture.

    Moving on.

I wish I could agree with you, but I see it as getting a once serviceable, overused LOOGY on the cheap.

    Yes, moving forward.......
