I don't know why we are so worried about a leadoff hitter

I have said that if they do sign BJ Upton, I would not have a problem with him batting first. Prado is becoming a doubles machine (averaging 40 in three of the last four seasons), but it has been a while since this team had a leadoff hitter with legitimate power. Maybe Marquis Grissom back in '96.

Simmons will be leadoff if none are aquired.
don't you know...in order to be a lead-off hitter..you need speed.Just get on base and you're fine.
True and I made a thread about Simba batting leadoff during this past season. But some power/aggressiveness at the top of the order might be just what we need to boost the RISP woes. Get this team off to faster starts, more early leads, ya know?Originally Posted by beldugo
Speed is a luxury to have at the lead-off spot but it's not a necessity, imo. As long as you can handle yourself with the bat (since you're getting more at-bats than the others) and get on base at a good rate...you'll always be a good leadoff hitter regardless of speed.
In '96, Grissom hit 23 HR 28 SB with .489 SLG% (.838 OPS). Braves were 2nd in the NL in Slugging% and 4th in runs.

They won 96 games that year, second best record in baseball. If only Dave Justice didn't get hurt...
