Absolutely right. Willingham's value is no where near as high as Span because of the contract and age. We have to try and keep a solid defense out there as well. BJ is not the greatest defender in the world as it is. Apparently the Braves scoffed at the idea of giving up 2 prospects for Fowler....if they aren't going to give up 2 top prospects for the likes of Fowler, and they did not win a trade negotiation for Span (when we have better prospects than what the Nats gave)...then it makes me feel like we have something else going on that is staying quiet. The question is....what is that something else?? I called BJ since June....my gut is telling me now that we are going after it with the likes of a Justin Upton or Gordon. I hope I a right...but there is something up when we are turning away 2 prospects for Fowler and 1 mid-high level prospect for Span when we have the surplus. Something big on the horizon????
Bill James predicts that Willingham hits 30 HR and posts an .833 OPS. I think 25 HR might be accurate. Still not bad at all. I prefer Justin Upton, but Willingham wouldn't be the worst consolation prize.
Justin is my first option, but I'll say it again: Willingham had 65 extra base hits in 2012, which would have led the Braves. In the seasons he played 140+ games, he averages 60 XBHs. Career .483 SLG%, and career-best .524 in 2012.
You don't have to sell me on Willingham, but it will come down to how much each costs. With Upton, I think Wren would have to start with Teheran and Ahmed then build around it. If the Twins aren't eager to deal, then Willingham becomes more expensive than what we assume. I could see the Twins playing hard ball to the point where it just makes more sense to pony up for Upton.
I know not many have brought this up but J Uptons home and away splits are not great over the last 3 seasons.
I don't really want to give up two top specs plus more for him either, I really think one Upton is enough.
