The Red Sox agreed to a two-year contract with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald first reported that the sides were nearing a deal. Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com first reported that the sides were building momentum and had discussed a two-year deal.

Gomes is most comfortable in the 2 hole and he has good bat control and plate discipline. I still think the team must relegate Ryan Sweeney to a 4th OF role due to his struggles against LHP. The question is what move is next?

I think Nick Swisher could still be in the fold given his versatility and again plate discipline. But addressing the bullpen and rotation needs to be Cherington's priority at this point. I believe Carlos Villanueva makes a ton of sense to man a spot at the back of the rotation. In the pen, sorting through the list of available FAs- I would target J.P. Howell, Jason Frasor, Jason Grilli & Mike Adams (If financially realistic).

According to the OF metrics I'm looking at Gomes is no worse in RF then LF. FanGraphs and BR both agree - he's a look-a-like. He's a crappy fielder for sure, but not restricted to just LF.

Fenway's RF is the biggest in the Majors, but TB's is quite sizable as well, as is Oakland.

Gomes hits better in the #3 and #4 slot then 2, but he is quite good in the #2 - and there is little chance he gets any shots at those.

Gomes career wise hits better playing RF than any other position in case anyone cares about that.

Actually you have to trade to get Gordon. KC has a huge OF, he can range well. His range is probably in the same class as Crawford, but his arm is better. Not as good a RF as LF (true for most that don't have killer arms, but hardly a OH MY GOD! RF).

Well if he's as good as Sweeney I'd love him in RF, just depends on the price we have to pay for him. If it's a 3 spec package I'd imagine it's something we should take a long look at.

2,3 or 4 in the lineup?

Jeez, I was picturing him at 6 or 7, have some pop and walk ability near the bottom of our lineup, especially as a platoon player.

And I'd definitely put him and Kalish as a platoon in LF, neither has the speed or range to play RF in Fenway.

Plus, Gomes 2012-to-career zone rating in LF is 12.53-11.41, in RF its 7.44-3.63. He is significantly better in LF than in RF.
