Sox close to signing Gomes to 2 year deal

    Scott Lauber ‏@ScottLauber
Can confirm through industry source that #RedSox are closing in on 2-year deal with OF Jonny Gomes. @Sean_McAdam was first to report

Worth noting: #RedSox looking for more than one OF. Adding Gomes wouldn't preclude them from signing others. Also, Gomes' role unclear

Seems a year too long. .974 OPS vs lefties last year, .894 career.

Depends on $$$. He could be a trait target the deadline.

also could be a lowrisk/high reward type signing... the kind that the yankees were successfull with last year

I think this means goodbye to Cody Ross though.

Unless they trade Ells, there's no reason not to give Kalish a chance to see if he can be a starter. If they sign an OF it's probably someone that hits rhp better to come off the bench/platoon, Gomes makes Ross redundant.

The Red Sox are closing in on a two-year contract with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports (on Twitter). MVP Sports Group represents Gomes.

The Red Sox narrowed their search for outfielders to focus on Gomes and Cody Ross in recent days, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reported earlier today. McAdam first reported that the Red Sox had discussed a two-year deal with Gomes.

Gomes, 31, spent this past season with the Athletics as a corner outfielder and designated hitter. He posted a .262/.377/.491 batting line with 18 home runs and 44 walks in 333 plate appearances. Gomes, a career .284/.382/.512 hitter against left-handed pitching, continued hitting southpaws well in 2012. He posted a .974 OPS against lefties and hit 11 homers.

The Orioles have also been linked to Gomes, who was not ranked among MLBTR's top 50 free agents.

I don't like it being a two year deal, but it's still a solid signing.

Sox close to signing Gomes to 2 year deal

I highly doubt Ross comes back now. They are fairly similar. My guess Ross really wants 3 years.

It's really not bad since we've been vulnerable to LHP the past few years, and it's short term.

If Ross is 3 years for $24M and that's too much for the Sox (and me too), than Gomes makes sense at much less (he's a crappy OF too BTW) of a package.

Sands/Nava in LF and Gomes/Kalish in RF? Cheap money and may be decent. Also Sands as a back-up 1B, and all 4 for PH and DH fill in when Ortiz is out.

Better snag at least a Jackson in FA and top set-up guy/would be closer, and a name 1B to keep Sox fans from jumping off the bridge.

6/27/09: “We expect [Rondo] to play by the rules and be a leader as a point guard. We need him to be more of a leader,” Ainge said. “There were just a couple situations where he was late this year, I don’t know if he was sitting in his car, but showed up late and the rest of the team was there. We have team rules and you have to be on time. He was fined for being late, he said he was stuck in traffic, and it’s just unacceptable.”

    Some jerks never learn.....
