I actually think the Haren non deal if you want to call it that will be a blessing in disguise
What do you mean? Edit: Nevermind I read further. I know we'll never see it, but I'd like to know what the specifics of that deal were going to be. The fact that no one else traded for him says something to me though.

This is what I was saying, I don't know how that is baiting? I don't care what side of the fence you fall on in this discussion, if they do nothing this offseason, I think everyone will be slightly pissed.

How do you take it if they sign none of the big name FAs?

Depends what else they do and what those other players get from other teams contract wise.

How much do you value a win right now, for the Cubs, in dollars? Any player projections? Just curious.

I'd say I value a win for the cubs as currently constructed under the $5 mil generic amount allotted to it because of how bad they are. I understand the idea that you need to sign these players regardless of whether you are wasting x number of years, and to a point I agree about players like Greinke. When a guy like that is available I understand spending on him. Hamilton, I just really want no part of and like I've said about BJ Upton, I'm not a huge fan, I think he will get a very large contract, and i don't think he is a player like Greinke where you ignore your current position on a win curve to attain. I'm not quite sure what you mean by player projections, but if you mean $/yr I can see it something like...

    Hamilton 5/120
    Upton 6/90
    Greinke 6/138
Pagan 4/48 (he could get a lot more or less than this)

If a guy like BJ can be had at 4/48 ish I would get behind that signing

I'm kind of starting to hate the whole "$/WAR" paradigm.

For one thing, as I said before, I believe we are in the early stages of another prolonged period of quick inflation in MLB. We've had about a decade of salary stability, but that's not really normal. You're talking about a very quickly moving target.

More important, the value of wins is really, really not linear. Eight one-win players are not the same as one eight-win player.

I think as long as you recognize it as slightly arbitrary and only an estimate its fine.

Say those numbers go up but not by much, what's the reaction?

    Say:

    6/135 for Hamilton
    Upton 6/110
    Greinke 7/145
    Pagan 4/52

? Are those crushing/deal killing costs?

I'm kind of starting to hate the whole "$/WAR" paradigm.
Especially when a president within the game, a good one at that, throws out a number nearly double that at 8/9 million. It's a very simplistic way to analyze, and maybe step one in a series of calculations if that.

    yes
    yes
    probably not
    probably not

I was not saying that those are numbers I'd sign those players to, I was saying those are figures I could see those players signing at.

The Dodgers just got $280 million/year for their cable deal. The price of a win just tripled.

    ADD:

RHSP Jeff Samardzija, CF Brett Jackson and C Wellington Castillo to the Diamondbacks for RHP Trevor Bauer, RHP Charles Brewer, and LHP David Holmberg.

Montero happens to be one of the few Cs who hits RHP better than LHPs. I'm basing the few based on the one who did in FA. Yaaay.

Trade Alfonso Soriano, Josh Vitters, and Carlos Marmol to the Yankees for RHP Joba Chamberlain, C JR Murphy, and RHP Brett Marshall.

    Sign:

    Russell Martin C - 2/10
    BJ Upton 6/112
    Eric Chavez 2/12
    Mark Reynolds 1/8
    S. Hairston
Francisco Liriano 2/16 with an option for a third
Kevin Correia 1 with an option for two
    JP Howell
    Mark Lowe
    Jon Broxton 3
    Scott Baker
    Dioneer Navarro
Grady Sizemore (minor league or heavy incentives)

    C: Martin/Navarro
    1B: Rizzo
    2B: Barney
    SS: Castro
    3B: Chavez/Reynolds
    LF: Hairston/Sizemore
    CF: Upton

Sadly, not out of the question. I bet they go 7/140 or 8/160
